Looking for info for the Frankie Kennedy Winter School

Since I can’t go to Ireland in November, I’m going in the late part of December and I was thinking of checking this school out. I’d did a basic search but didn’t come up with much so I was wondering if you guys had any more info on the school?

Thanks,
Jack

Good luck!

Thanks! Do you by any chance have any info for the teachers, tuition fees, or things of that nature?

Darn that sucks, I guess we’ll have to wait for Friday Harbor to play a few tunes, I’m not sure if I’m going though, we’ll see!

Yeah, it deffinatly sucks az. I have my scholarship to think about and the coaches wouldn’t be too happy with me if I left during the playoffs to go to Ireland! If you don’t make it out to Friday Harbor this year Az, I’ll deffinatly have to make a special trip up to Montreal… I’ve been meaning to anyways. Have fun without me!!

I know my Da usually takes the bodhrán workshop at it, but I haven’t a clue what the fees etc are, your best bet is contacting the details I gave you above,

Hi J.,

I know a piper from L.A. who went last year and he said it was great. He went to the piping class of course, which was taught by Sean McKeon.

If you want I can give him your email and tell him to write you about it…

Gweedore is the in the Gaeltacht, so you better brush up on your Irish before you go!

Chifidh me thu, :stuck_out_tongue:

Justine

P.S. Like the new avatar?

Yeah, I like the new avatar but I’m afraid to comment on it for fear of being slapped. And that would be great if you passed a note to that guy to drop me a line about the kennedy school.

So they don’t speak any english in the Gaeltacht? You’ve got me all intimadated now cause I don’t speak a word of Irish.

And will you be at the bodhran this sunday?

Thanks Murrough for the info!!

Slapped? It’s ok if you say it doesn’t look like me in real life. :stuck_out_tongue: It’s Louise Brooks (20’s actress).

I’ll tell Joey to email you…

Don’t worry about people not speaking English. Joey was saying that people will speak to you in Irish first, but then if you don’t understand they’ll switch to English. You should learn a few phrases before you go, though, and then the locals will be impressed. When I was in Glencolmcille, everyone there talked about Gweedore as being the “real, authentic Gaeltacht”, where people speak Irish for their first language.

I’m starting to get jealous of you…I wonder if I can swing going up there.

Is there a session on Sunday? It is Halloween. Probably a good idea to call ahead of time and make sure there is one. I’d like to head up there, though. Are you going yourself?

Justine

Hmm…New Year’s in an Ghaeltacht. Very tempting. Trying to google past events and see what exactly they teach…if they have anglo concertina, hoo boy…

Edit - I just emailed, will post anything I find out.

Hi - I went to the School a few years ago when the snow fell and only half the students turned up - it was fantastic.

Don’t worry about the language - everyone there speaks English and it’s not a Gaelic speaking School - this lot are winding you up!

They’re really realxed and don’t usually publish any info until December anyway as they never really know who’s going to be around other than Altan and the usual friends - Conor Byrne is one of the flute/whistle teachers and he’s great. If you email them you’ll get a reply sometime - just book your time and go!

Can’t recommend it highly enough, but you’ll have to be quick to get accommodation in Bunbeg, Dunlewey or Gweedore.

The Frankie Kennedy Winter School will commence on December 28th and will continue until January 2nd. All the events will take place in Gweedore, Co. Donegal. We will be using two principle venues during the School, The Dunlewey Lakeside Centre, in Dunlewey, and Ostan Gaothdobhair, in Magheraclogher.

During the School classes will be provided on the following musical instruments: Flute, Fiddle, Uilleann Pipes, Whistle, Bodhran, Button Accordeon, Sean Nós Singing, Old Stlyle Step Dancing and Accompaniment (Guitar/Bouzouki).

As from the beginning, we are assisted again this year by Tionscnamh Lúgh, who have arranged an excellent series of concerts. Their help is always very welcome. We also thank the local paople, our sponsors, Dunlewey Lakeside Centre and Óstán Gaoth Dobhair.

We will show the TG4 tv documentary “Frankie” about Frankie Kennedy and The Frankie Kennedy Winter School prior to the Flute Blowout. The CD “An Gaoth Aduaidh/The North Wind” will also be available for sale during the week.

This is a Winter School, so be prepared for the weather, good or bad. Pupils may, and are encouraged to bring recording devices to the classes. Instrumental classes are not suitable for pure beginners.

It looks like I will be going, at least to check out some of the concerts (assuming the weather is good and the roads are passable…I heard it’s snowing over there???) :astonished:

Any one else going to make it?

Justine

Hi
Its bucketing down at the moment, and there is not much snow on the forecast. Its supposed to get colder tomorrow and then on wednesday wet and windy again-- and so on.
I might be going up myself for a few tunes tomorrow night and definately will be there on the 30th for the concert.
Best, Hans

Sounds unpleasant. :sniffle: Right now it’s pouring down here, too, but not too cold. Hope to be there for New Years’ weekend, see you there!
