Looking for High F

I’ve got a Genertion high F (nickel not brass). I think it’s the best of the Generations I have.

But my interest is growing in getting another high F–perhaps an Abell or a Burke (brass). If you have one of these you want to sell or trade please contact me by email or PM. Or is there something else you’d recommend instead?

Hi Keith .

The only high F that I own is a Chieftain. The tone is very good , but the reason I bought it was the finger spacing. It’s much easier for a man to play, without bunching up your fingers.

I have Burkes and an Abell in F. They’re lovely.

Actually, I think Keith was talking about a high F one octave higher than your Chieftain (which does bunch up your fingers quite nicely!).

I’ve got a couple of brass Generation F’s that sound pretty good but their cross-fingered C-naturals are awful.

I have heard good things about Abell high Fs, but that’s quite a bit to pay for a high F.

I’d get your Gen F tweaked by Jerry Freeman - you may not need another one after that. I’ve got a tweaked one and it’s lovely.

Dale, do you have a preference between the [two?] Burkes? Abell vs. Burke? (These are somewhat unfair questions I suppose.)

Yeah, I’ve been thinking about that–maybe getting a tweaked brass Gen. The nickel Gen really is quite nice. I guess what I’m having an inkling for is the kind of woody, swirly chiff sound of the Abell or, different as they are, the purer sound of the Burke. But then, the tweaked Generation doesn’t take such a bite out of the finances. (And it’s the finances that lead me to search for folks who might have a good used Abell or Burke they’d sell.)

I have the Burke FA (high F aluminum). Based on my experience with aluminum and brass D’s and C’s, I would recommend aluminum over the brass. The FA is a sweet one, though I’ve only played it three times (not a lot of call for a high F in my Tuesday night sessions). I’m very impressed with the Burke–more so than the myriad other Burkes I own. I play primarily O’Riordan, though I have many others.

I could upload a “minus one” track I did recently for a vocalist for a pastoral installation if you’re interested in hearing the FA (and if someone could tell me where/how to upload an MP3). The track features the FA in the intro, interludes, and outro.
