A recent thread has fueled my interest once again for a Harper high D. If anyone has a Harper they’d consider parting with, send me a PM. I’d prefer the tunable version.
If interested in a trade, I have a new Reyburn session D I’d be willing to trade.
I called LIM today and here’s the basic conversation:
LIM: Hello, Lark in the Morning, this is xxxxxx, may I help you?" Me: Hello, this is xxxxxxx in Madison, Alabama. How are you doing? LIM: Great, thank you. And yourself? Me: Wonderful, thanks. I’m just checking to see if you sell tunable Harper high D whistles. LIM: Tunable? Hmmm…I’m not sure. Let me check. (pause). Nope, sorry, we only sell the one-piece non-tunable Harper in the key of D. Would you like to order one? Me: Well darn. Ok then, do you have the non-tunable high D in stock? LIM: I’m glad you asked that question. Let me check. (pause) Nope, sorry. We’re out of stock right now. Let me check to see when we’ll be getting more in. (much longer pause) Oh no. It appears we’ve had an order in for over a year and haven’t received any whistles yet. Me: A YEAR?! Good Lord. LIM: Oh, they could come in any time now. Would you like to order one? We won’t charge your credit card until it’s shipped. Me: Uh… I don’t think so. Maybe I’ll check back next year (quick laugh).
at which point we cordially ended the conversation with the usual good-byes.
OK, I’ve checked every avenue I can think of and not only can I not find anyplace that sells tunable Harper Ds, apparently there’s no place to buy Harpers of any kind…period.
Why am I not surprised with that conversation. Funny though, just the same. Please let me know when/if you find the Harpers in the US. Tuneable or non-tuneable.
Not sure if this is any help, but I bought a D/C set from Hobgoblin UK a year or so ago, and got Steve to make me a separate head for the C body, he is a very nice guy and he charges less than Hobgoblin for his tuneables, he doesn’t advertise his whistles himself but I could let you have his number as I know he has no problem making/selling whistles direct.
This isn’t something I can’t live without since I already have some great whistles. It’s more curiosity, so don’t want to be going to the expense of making overseas calls but certainly thank Sponge for offering Steve’s phone #.
Interesting… in the Harper section on the C&F high-end whistles page, I read that Steve himself strongly recommends the tunable versions of his whistles when playing with other instruments but apparently there aren’t any vendors that sell the tunable D by itself…just the D/C set, which I don’t want. Even The Whistle Shop didn’t sell tunable Ds, just the non-tunable D or D/C set.
Since it appears the only way to get a tunable D is to either buy the D/C set or order direct from Steve, I’ll just be patient and see if something shows up here. If not, since Hobgoblin UK is expecting some whistles next month, maybe Steve will be shipping some to LIM as well and I’ll get a non-tunable to satisfy my curiosity. Who knows. If it’s meant to be, it’ll happen. If not, I’m fine with it.
Thanks again, guys.
BTW, Sponge… do you like your Harper? I’d like to hear your comments on the tone, playability, etc. Thanks.
the tone of the Harper is like no other whistle I have played, it is very distinctive, if you go over to Tony hinnigans web site or the kerry web site you will hear them played both by Tony and Phil, Tony loved the sound of his in his whistle review, mine sounds identical, so I would say that the Harper is very consistent on its production, it is also a very handsome whistle made of a different type of alloy than the Overton whistle, and thinner walls, I find it clogged a little quicker than most, the upper octave high A and B needed a little more air, but easily manageable, but they are quite loud, but with their unique sound I would say are worth the money.
Thanks. Just called and spoke to John. He has one D and one C, both non-tunable and the D is the engraved version, which I don’t want.
Sponge, thanks so much for your comments about your Harper. I’ve seen Phil’s video and it sounded great to me, which is what sparked my interest in the Harper. Funny, but I contacted Phil regarding another subject and mentioned his Harper video asking his opinion. After watching a basically glowing video review saying he preferred the Harper over an Overton and expecting some positive comments, I was surprised by his response which said he’d only recommend it as a “second” whistle and it’s not that good.
