Looking for a teacher

Does anyone know of a good ITM / flute teacher in the Portland, Oregon, USA area? I’ve been playing for a year or so, and progressing quite well in a self-taught way, but I think it might be a good idea to seek out some help from an expert before I reinforce too many bad habits.

Thanks!

Jon

I know a good one in Seattle, J.

Check with Hanz Araki.

On the one hand, I’d fully recommend some lessons with a “classically” trained flute player. A good player will “whack” any bad habits out of you!

On the other hand, ITM appears to be homespun, and the “classical” flute somehow managed to become adopted to it.

I’ve taken lessons from Andrea Cooper in Seattle. She’s a good instructor, especially with the basics. Her number is 206-365-3585, e-mail is: andreacooper at yahoo dot com. I think Hans lives in Portland now. I’ve had a lesson from him. He’s a better player, but, my personal opinion, I think Andrea is a better instructor for beginners.

You are fortunate that one of the best Irish flute and Irish traditional music teachers anywhere lives in Southeast Portland.

His name is Jan Deweese and he can be reached at (503) 236-6752

Cheers!

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions! They are much appreciated. I’ll start by giving Jan Deweese a call.
