Looking for a Feadóg Mk II

Yes, you read that right. I am looking for a Feadóg Mark II whistle - but not brass ones, i’d like a Nickel one.

Recently, i got me a brass Mk II from eBay. I’m not really that into buying it since i have been reading negative reviews about it over the past years, but out of curiosity and so that my Feadóg Mark 1-2-3 line would be complete, i bought it.

The Mark I is definitely one of my fave whistles around. I love it, it’s sweet and i can reach the D on the 3rd octave, but it’s brass and I’m not such a big fan of brass whistles 'coz I don’t like the smell on my hands. The current version which is the Mark III, hmmm, I’m not too crazy about it 'coz the 2nd octave is a little too raspy for my taste, esp. above high G. I have 5 Mk IIIs in brass and nickel and they all share the same raspiness.

When I got the Mark II, i wasn’t expecting much, again 'coz of the reviews. But when I played it, I liked it. Liked it a lot better than the New version. Plus, i really like the beak 'coz it’s not too thick, my lips are very comfortable with it. I knew the moment I heard it play, that’s the whistle for me… after all these years.

So… if anyone here got an old Feadóg Mark II nickel whistle (with a black head/mouthpiece of course), and don’t like or not using it anymore, I’ll be more than willing to give it a home.

I know, i know that i already got one so you may ask why i need another one. Like I said, the one I got is in brass which i’m not very fond of, and the brass versions got green heads. I like green but I know I have seen nickel ones with black heads before and I thought I liked them, that’s why (and it looks cool!!! not that the green ones doesn’t look cool).

BTW, even the old Acorn whistles will do. If you can recall, before they change the heads to the current one which is the same being used on Oaks, they used Mark II heads on Acorn whistles. So if you have old Acorns, that’ll do too. I have several nickel Feadóg shafts so replacing it will be easy. I just want to have that black/nickel Feadóg Mark II, that’s all…

Pao, this is an interesting quest.

I am a fan of the Mark I Feadog. I’ve played them for many years. I still have a handful of those. I also have a couple Mark II’s but don’t prefer those to the Mark I. I’m not crazy about the Mark III’s. But I have never seen a Mark II other than the brass tube with the green head! I guess I have led a sheltered whistleing life! My Mark I’s are all brass with the green head as well. Hope you find one and if you do please post a photo.

Why not just get a nickel tube for your Mk II and put the fipple on it? There’s nothing that says you have to use the tube that comes with the whistle, a lot of the tubes are interchangeable. I did this with a Mk I, and it does sound better with the thicker walled nickel tube.

You may have to try a few nickel tubes until you get a fit, but the Feadog/Oak nickel tubes should fit.

I have two Feadog whistles, a Mark 2 and Mark 3 (both brass and not for sale). Just writing to confirm the brass tubes are interchangable between these two whistles and would assume the nickle tube would be the same diameter. I also favor the Mark 2.

I have tried that, and i really still love the sound that comes from the Mark II head, but as i have said, I am looking for a black Mark II head, or a whole Mark II nickel whistle. I believe ‘black is the colour’ for me, it’s just different and that’s what got me :smiley:

Maybe we are talking about two different whistles as the Mark II but probably not. Here’s a question for you, pao. What does the bottom of your Mark I look like? Does it have a sticker at the bottom of the tube? I apologize that I can’t respond with some pictures of my own right now. I am many miles away from my Feadogs at the moment. But the most distinguishing visual characteristic that differentiated the Mark I from the Mark II, in my experience, is an extra sticker that was wrapped around the bottom of the Mark I tube. Yes the head and the tube were changed with the Mark II but that was not obvious to the casual observer. It took me a little while to realize that the design of the parts had in fact changed as I bought new whistles (back in the early 90’s?). The extra flat beveled surfaces on the side of the head in your picture look like a Mark I.

Previous posts have indicated that there were two cosmetically different Mark II’s. I wish those pictures were still linked to the archived posts. Someone had examples to display of these. They would have used the same head and tube designs but different stickers. The examples you show, at least from my memory, look like Mark II heads alright. The Mark II’s that I play have a sticker similar to the Mark I you show but nothing at the bottom of the tube.

I did think about the Oaks after I last posted. I have a few Oaks too and generally like them. I also wondered if you had tried an Oak tube on the Mark II Feadog head. But I see you want a complete whistle in black on chrome dress.

And as I look at a Feadog I have, it has the head of the whistle in the middle above, the label of the lower/left whistle and no lower label. So is this a
Mark I 1/2 ?

thanks for setting that memory streight in my mind; ill have to have a rummage for that whistle when im back in NI for christmas, im pritty sure its irrevocably banjaxed (i remember standing on it and warping the tube) but i would love to find it!
