Looking at buying another flute - opinions wanted

I’m contemplating buying another flute. I have a couple on hand, along with my current flute, but they shall remain nameless in an attempt for unbiased opinions.

Here are three recordings I made, and I’m curious to know which one people prefer the most and why (sorry for the slightly different volume levels):

#2 http://www.box.net/shared/ed6ny9ualzqlfd9lbcp2

#3 http://www.box.net/shared/e5p6tg3mxty59mnvzxb3

If any of those links don’t work, please let me know.

Also, if anyone knows the name of this slip jig, I’d love to know it as well…

Thanks,

Eric

Flute one has more harmonics and the third more oomph to my ears. Flute 2 falls somewhere in between.

Leitrim Town, aka The Whinny Hills of Leitrim.

If I get run over today on the way to band practice, the last words I’ll say will be Leitrim Town…that’ll confuse them.

Thank you so much MTGuru for solving a 5 year old mystery!

The audio quality is quite different from clip to clip, especially on clip 2. You should try to record one after the other, at the same distance from the microphone.
From what I can hear (but keep in mind the above) flute in clip 3 seems responsive, with a big sound but quite dry. Audio on clip 1 is quite dull, nice second 8ve though. Flute on clip 2 sounds lighter (smaller bore?). I’m not going to say which one I prefer, not with this audio quality!

Eric, I’d like to know what you are hoping to accomplish with another flute. The differences in each are not remarkable and I’m not sure your playing demands better than what you’ve got. I hate to criticise, as my own ego is fragile enough, but I think it is fair to say you do not take a particularly nuanced approach to the tune, so unless you are looking to maybe get some keys that you don’t have, spending money on a fourth flute begs the question of why.

Hey Cubitt - no hurt feelings at all. I’m not looking for a fourth flute, but possibly a second flute - one that would look more appropriate for the renaissance festival than my current 8 keyed stick. I’ve been looking at keyless or one key (not truly appropriate, but that one key is handy).

As for the tune, it’s one I learned about 5 years ago, but no one I play with knows it so I rarely play it. In fact, I dusted it off just today as I was going over tunes I haven’t played in quite some time, but it’s still fairly dusty as evidenced by the recordings. I just used it because I didn’t know it’s name and I was hoping someone here did.

Eric

The audio quality is so different between the three clips that it’s impossible to evaluate the three flutes. I would really like to hear flutes #1-3 played at the same distance from the mic at the same recording level, etc.

Go for the Olwell
