Here is to wishing you all a very meaningful Thanksgiving. So many folks including our own members here at C & F have been left highly impacted by super storm “Sandy” to sort through the rubble that was once their homes. Let’s not forget their plight, but rather, take the time to reflect on all that we each hold to be personally Thankful for on this very American holiday of Thanksgiving. I implore each of you to make a personal pledge to do something, anything you can, to reach out and help our fellow citizens so tragically suffering as a result of this natural disaster.
Yes, please keep the hurricane suffering peoples at the forefront of issues. The media will eventually go away, however, the devastation will takes decades to rebuild.
I was just up y’all’s way. The devastation is really impressive. There were thousands of trees that had been cut to get them off the Merritt Parkway. In my hometown, Dock and Dine (a restaurant) had jus re-opened around Lobor Day after the damage from Irene and the snow storm. It took three feet of water, and some outbuildings near it were torn from their foundations. I really wonder if they need to rebuild on stilts. A mile or so away, there’s a pier built from 20-30 ton stones, and the storm scattered them like marbles.
It does give us a lot to be thankful for. My folks lost power for three days, but are otherwise unscathed. There were 20 of us for Thanksgiving, and a good time was had by all.
The homeowners along beach area here were given FEMA funds last year after storm Irene to raise houses up on stilts. Some people did, some did not. The flooding from SuperStorm Sandy 2012 was highest ever on record, even above the stilts so some people were wiped out completely twice.
Chas,
I echo Ytliek’s sentiment and I am glad that your family was not injured. So many were. Let’s keep after the media and politicians and not let these folks go without the help they need.
