Longer bag for flat b chanter?

Santa is getting me a Patkos flat b chanter for Christmas and I was assuming that i could just hook that up to my standard 30" long concert d bag. But i read something that makes me think that bag may be too short. Sooooo…

Will I need a longer bag?

If so how much longer?

Could I rig some tubing to make my current bag work?

You can try that once the chanter arrives, but I don’t know if it will be necessary, as you will probably not be playing your D regulators with the chanter (apart from maybe the B and one or two other keys). I use my B chanter with my concert pitch set and have had no problems with bag length. Mine is also by Richard and I like it very much.

If its not too late, ask the pipemaker to make the air intake an inch longer. Failing that, its easy to rig something up, but it might not be pretty.

30" long is a long bag… my own on my C set is 26" and I’d use a 27-28" for a B and 29" for a Bb… unless that is you have a very long Body to your bag which might make the Neck effectively short.

Adjusting the length of the bag neck with tubing works well. I used an extension made from brass tubing and vinyl hose for a couple of years and know a piper or two who use such extensions more or less permanently. Not the most aesthetically pleasing bit of gear, but it works.
