OK, a bit indelicate here…
I know a lot of people (my Mom and wife for two) who insist on lighting a match to eliminate, shall we say, undesirable bathroom odors. They claim that this somehow gets rid of the odor. I maintain that all this does is partially cover up the smell with the additional unpleasantness of burning sulfur. If I’m in a feisty mood, I insist that it smells like burnt sh*t.
Is there any evidence that this combustion somehow truly eliminate the odor?
I don’t know about bathroom odours.
I regularly play backgammon on Tuesday nights with a friend whose smoking would put a chimney to shame. I’ve persuaded her to have a candle or two lit while we play. She is happy with that, and although my clothes still reek and have to go straight in the wash, I’m not struggling for breath all evening. These don’t have to be scented candles, you understand, just regular wax candles.
I think it has to do with creating a current of air upwards, which draws the offensive smell that way too. A bathroom candle just might have the same effect, although I thought the particles in the cigarette smoke have something to do with it, and make it more practical.
As for lighting a match, that would hardly do the job unless it was a very small f*rt, like a pet-de-nonne… …or a very long match, like a taper.
This would not work for me.
And it is not a good idea to leave candles unattended, so bathroom candles don’t seem such a great idea. Unless you’re having one of those long sexy baths that the film industry likes so much.
