My NA flutemaking friend who is also a world class woodworker convinced me to submit a couple of whistles to the Northeast Woodworker’s Association show this weekend in Saratoga Springs. He entered them in the “odds and ends” category which included many hard to classify items: decorative sculptures, knicknacks, musical instruments, models, etc. I went up to see the show today and was floored to see that I had won Third Place!
Sweetest moment: when I got to the display, a gentleman was looking over the 5 whistles and commented that “They should have someone here playing tunes on them”. I picked up the Bocote whistle and rattled off The Sweeps Hornpipe…
Congrats Paul for winning bronze against all odds!
How are you going to spend the prize money? A new house, tools to make a low D, a foundry to cast metal whistles, or a trust fund for the beginning luthiers?
As a matter of curiosity, what were the items that kept you out of first place? I’d be very surprised if they were things I’d like more than your whistles, so those people are lucky I wasn’t the judge.
Yes, I know, I don’t know what they are. I don’t have to know what they are.
Right. You want to remain eligible for the Northeast Delrinworker’s Association show.
I’m enjoying the Bloodwood more and more as I get used to how differently it plays, compared to all my other whistles. I like that I can get carried away a bit without worrying about octave jumping.
