You’re English is fine…keep watching the boards, a Rogge D left-hand chanter might just jump up at any time.

Thanks. I will.

In truth, I have asked Seth G. to estimate for a lefty half-set.
I have no suitable lefty chanter now, so I want to get one soon as possible for use until Seth’s set will be completed.

that’s cool. A new language on the board. C&F is becoming more and more international. Welcome

Very cool. Looks like I’m going to have to get up off my lazy backside and learn a few more languages.

Isn’t a left handed chanter a bit like a left handed hammer or a left handed
telephone?
Is there such a thing? I suppose if you have lots of keys it may be necessary, otherwise isn’t a usual chanter ambidexterous???

I suppose it is where the keys are mounted that makes the difference.

aonori,
if you have a left-handed keyed chanter on order you should have no problem playing a right handed keyless (or one C key) for the short time until your new chanter arrives.

There’s a left-handed half set made by Eugene Lambe for sale on e-bay.

I don’t know if it’s any good, the owner is in Mallow, County Cork.
Ireland, and has bought a full set

Looks like a pretty decent set.

Aside from the issues of key blocks and keys, there can be a big difference between a left handed chanter and a right handed chanter. Consider that some makers orient their back D off center. If you are looking DOWN the length of the chanter and the tone holes are oriented at “12 o’clock” the back d is often oriented at 7 oclock. If one were a left handed piper, this would be quite uncomfortable for playing. If the chanter is scalloped at all (ergonomically) this could also create problems for the left handed player.
Tim Britton, myself, and some otgher makers will often create a ergonomic “thumb rest” for the right hand. Again, a left handed player would find this to be very unworkable.

you have a pm.

I can find the similar argument about difference between R & L chanter in this forum, it’s sometime repeated.

Because I’m just a beginner piper and have never touched a real left-handed chanter, I don’t really understand their difference. But actually I use a normal chanter in left-handed with some kind of diffeculties that never feel in right-handed, although I’m surely left-hander. Maybe most of all are from my lack of learning and experience. But I want to make sure it myself with left-handed chanter.

That’s the reason that I look for it.

I don’t know anything about left-handed chanters but…

Davey, who posted a reply above, is making my new set of pipes, and he has also done work for another Japanese player, Innerhand.
He is the David Boisvert who owns www.greenwoodpipes.com

I’m sure you have seen it before, but the Midnight Walker forum is a good place to get information in Japan.

mukade-san arigatou.
pura mee shimasita. Sochira de…

I just finished making a “Left handed” chanter with wooden head and stop key. The fellow wanted the keys ( other than the C key) mounted on the other side of the chanter which I did. To be honest, I realized that I could just a easily learn to play the chanter right handed even though the keys were in a different position.

In my opinion a left handed chanter is like a left handed baseball bat.

Regulators and bag placement are a different matter.

In terms of Irish music, keys are not a necessity. 99% of all tunes can be played on a keyless chanter. The value of keys is more for looks than anything else. The C, F natural, G# all can be fingered by half holing, no keys necessary

All the best,
Pat Sky
