does anyone do these?
what’s the secret to doing them?
do you have to be ambidextrous?
thanks

I’ve heard pipers do really nice trills on A, but I don’t have the dexterity to do it.
On orchestral wind instruments, the music requires the ability to trill on any note, so there is no physiological reason why you shouldn’t be able to. Similar to crans and rolls, trills are done through muscle memory. Your brain thinks cran/roll/trill, and your hands do it. Developing the technique is the same as the way to get to Carnegie Hall.

I get no trill out of my left hand, my right hand, no problem.

Wait…that would be encouraging…

Is this the part where I caution you two about certain health risks, especially blindness?
And other side effects

well, now… there’s no shame in being left-handed, is there?

AS FOR THE TOPIC AT HAND (har, har, har)
Secrets, eh?
presumably you’re referring to trills on g, a, b,& c, yes?
Presumably your are looking for a way to make them ‘pop out’?, such as adding a schlag to the start of the trill and/or grupetti at the end?
one can begin a trill slowly, increase its rapitidy, & decrease again for a dramatic ending,
or one can hit it full speed, slow down & speed up again,
all dependent (of course) on the contextual relevance of the music at hand?
Trills on G, obviously, involve the right hand a little as possible
trills on A, & B hmmm are we talking half step trills, or whole step trills, by the way??
GUESS one could wiggle the left thumb over back D hole to trill on C , but…why ?
And I will personally eat the hat of the piper who can convincingly trill back D- to E.
Or, at least get them famously inebriated. ![]()
So can you be a tad more specific about trills?
ambidexterousness seems less an issue on this thread than innuendo… ![]()
the main one i was thinking of was on ‘a’ where the trill consists of ‘a’ and ‘b’ oscillating at top speed
i hadn’t really thought that much about doing it on ‘g’ or ‘b’ but again it would be a trill consisting of the note and the next note up on the chanter - i’m going to try to see if i can work on these as well
it seems that this ornament is not used a great deal in piping - o’flynn is the only contemporary piper i can think of who uses it a lot (the third part of ‘an phis fluich’ sounds amazing with the ‘a’ trill)
