A crafty talented friend of mine is making me a leather flute roll as I can’t find anything I like on t’interweb. We wondered if there was any further desire for these hand made objects out there is flute world. She can make them to fit the dimensions of your flute, in either leather with padding inside or sheepskin, so, nice and warm in there for those of us in cooler climes.
I wondered if any makers might be interested or if there is interest amongst collectors / players?
That would depend on the stiffness of the leather??? Though I suppose one would hardly call a thick, rigid leather case like the old Army band flute belt holsters or antique telescope cases a “roll”.
e.g.
And, let’s remember, most normal flute cases, period or modern, are not airtight and do little or nothing to control humidity - and in temperate (especially maritime) NW Europe we mostly don’t have to worry much about doing so.
Back on-topic - “leather flute roll” - as in very stale sandwich with wooden filling?
I could post some pics once we’ve made mine if you like.
Great tip about sheepskin and bore oil, shall bear that in mind.
I don’t have a plan for controling humidty, mainly because I live in the UK and it’s not really a huge problem, but maybe more so for our pond friends.
I also prefer a case usually, but I have a really thick padded gig bag so figuered a tough piece of padded leather inside a padded gig bag would be sufficient for my purposes. But you would probably not want to chuck one around without a wooden (or plastic) case.
re: the Olwell rolls: Davy Levine showed me one on Skype yesterday, that’s exactly the kind of thing we were thinking of, apart from mybe not a zip at the top, but a flap which ties over (for the more ‘re-enactment’ of us.) But a zip would also work fine.
Would you think that a roll for flutes and a roll for whistles would be 2 good options? If so … would you want whistle rolls to be big enough for low D whistles or G/A or just normal D whistles? Oooh the options are endless.
We could make whistle rolls like drum stick holders, so you can hang them open from a shelf and select your whistle. or roll it to transport…
I have one of Patrick’s leather ones. It’s great. If I was trying to improve on it, I would add two slots for whistles and make the case a few inches longer; i.e., long enough to accommodate a cleaning stick.
