Last two CDs you bought

What are the last two CDs you bought, why do you like them or dislike them, and would you reccomend them and if so why?

Just curious…

The last two I bought were:

Tori Amos, Boys for Pele

and

Dead Can Dance, Toward the Within

I’m still getting used to them.

I love them both.

I seldom buy just two CDs. I save up and buy a whole bunch at once. My latest purchase was:

David Power - Cuaichín Ghleann Neifín - Excellent
The Raineys - More Excellent
Breda Keville - The Hop Down - Extremely Nice
Sarah & Rita Keane - Once I loved - Classic
Various - Travellers and Fellow Travellers - So-So

Why? Cuz I like to.

I mostly download music now, and listen to it on my laptop or iPod. I did buy an actual CD recently though:

and my last downloaded CD was

both of which i enjoy very much.

I think my last two were that Seamus Egan CD and that Cathal McConnell CD. It’s been a while since I bought a CD, though, so I could be wrong.

Amos Lee’s Shout Out Loud. Nice pop-blues.

And one by a lady’s Acapella group at UNC-Chapel Hill, called the Loreleis. I love those gals.

Agua Clara–a Peruvian group who were playing in NYC Penn Station last time we were there. Like.
A couple of Jazz cds from Whole Foods Market which I stuck in esposo’s Christmas stocking. Pretty good.

Portland by Kevin Burke & Mícheál Ó Domhnaill (RIP)
Even though it took me a few listens to get past the excess amounts of reverb,
this is fantastic music. Top notch. It’s had a lot of play time since I bought it a month ago.

Orphans by Tom Waits
Wow. This just blew my mind, absolutely brilliant. With 16-20 tracks
on each cd of a 3-disc release, it took me a while to get through
it all but I just love the different things he’s done here.

Have you forgotten? Tom Waits for no-one. :really:

Idlewild - Make Another World

Great return to noisy pop form from this Scottish indie band. Last few albums were a bit folky and subdued (but still great in my opinion), but this time the distortion pedals are back and the songs are faster.

Alasdair Roberts - Amber Gatherers

Took a couple of listens to get into this and it wasn’t as immediate as his previous album (a collection of murder ballads), although this one is certainly a happier time. Once it gets going though it’s superb. He’s one of the best contemporary young folk singers around just now and certainly is a lot more worthy than some of the bland acoustic rubbish that’s being hailed in the mainstream press recently.

Oh, Tom Waits for me

I forgot about the CD I bought on St. Pat’s day. There’s a local musician here named Billy “the Reverend” Brett.

He’s a fantastic musician (mostly plays mandolin but I’ve seen him on bass and harmonica too) and has a really unique bluesy voice. He just released a solo album after the group he was with for 8 years split (they were a great group and I was sad to see them split). It’s an interesting mix of folk music and he is donating the proceeds to the Phoenix Childrens Project… you should buy it and help the children!

Wrecking Ball by Emmylou Harris

Faster than the Speed of Life by Mars Bonfire

I had lost all hope of finding a CD of the last one. I paid about $10 for a used record of it in the 80’s, and the record was not in great shape, but it’s an amazing album. He was the guitarist of The Sparrow, the precursor to Steppenwolf, and wrote Born to be Wild. (That’s how much of a Steppenwolf fan I am.)

I’ve been wanting that one. The next time it comes up on eBay for cheap, I’m getting it.

Woodbridge Flute Choir - “Passages”

Laurel Zucker - “Handel’s Flute Sonatas”

Both are good albums. If you like that sort of thing!

The last time I bought CDs I bought 4 at once.

Millish by Millish, a young band playing a mix of ITM, Jazz, and various other styles.

Ar An bhFidil by Oisin Mac Diarmada.

Venus in Tweeds by Shooglenifty.

Coolfin by Donal Lunny.

I got this one in 2005. It was sent to me by mistake; i had ordered a different CD but this is the one i got. I listened to it and liked it so much i never sent it back.

Intrepid - Rory Campbell

Irish traditional Uilleann Pipes - Gerry McFadden

David

In the past couple years I’ve bought just about all the Cds in my collection at artists’ concerts.

“Waterloo, Tennesse” at an Uncle Earl concert a couple weeks before it came out officially.
Fyi, John Paul Jones produced it and played bass, piano, mandola or “Papoose & wobble board” on a few tracks. Who knew JPJ likes Oldtime and Bluegrass!

“Starch & Iron” by Rayna Gellert and “Song of the Traveling Daughter” by Abigail Washburn at that same concert.

And just last Sunday both my mom and I picked up copies of Casey Driessen’s latest Cd while at his concert.

I’m thinking seriously of volunteering to usher at concerts so I could get in for free and have more money to spend on Cds.
Either that or join a support group.

Moya Brennan – Signature (similar but not identical in style to her younger sister, Enya).

Harper’s Din – Banish Misfortune (actually, this was thrown in with a harp I just bought, but I like it a lot – one of the main musicians is one of the couple that run Melody’s Traditional Music and Harp Shoppe, where I bought the harp).
