Lady Catherine Bruce's Reel

This melody ate my brain! I luv it!
Before attempting to play it by ear, I decided to search for notes. Does anyone have sheet music of this?

Also - is there any resource on the Web with Irish/Scottish sheet music?

Found it here: http://ecf-guest.mit.edu/~jc/music/abc/Scotland/

Nice website, by the way!

I see there’s an “Earl Of Errol’s” reel there , too Louigi.

yup. But we then found out that it is a different tune, Through The Fields, a comtemporary tune by Martin Dunlea.

Howdy once more!

Here’s a file:
Irish or Scottish set of tunes

The first one is Lady Cathrine Bruce’s Reel, okay. But what are the rest? Can you help me to identify them?

Nice set of jigs Louigi. - I think they are scottish (a dashing white sargeant set, by the sound of them)

I think that the second last tune is Nelson Mandela’s Welcome to Glasgow.

Hi Louigi

You are a nuisance

I have had snippets of a song in my head after listening to your clip. After finally pinning it down. (My Tocher’s the Jewel), here is the link for the third jig.

Yeah, I know. This tune ate my brain as well =D

Anyway, thanks for keeping me updated on this - I am getting those abc files and will then learn to play this great stuff. (because the only way to get your brain back from a tune that ate it is to learn to play it)

I am really interested in what the second tune is. I love that transition from minor to major!

Is it too much tea, or is that Ye Banks and Braes O’ Bonnie Doon (at least that’s what Percy Grainger called it) tucked in there as the second-to-last jig?

Ye’re lettin’ the side doon , Davy ! Cathy’s right about the 2nd last tune. The “Nelson Mandela” tune you mentioned has 6 parts to it, and it’s no’ here. Also,“My Tocher’s The Jewel” on “The Session” certainly doesn’t look like the 3rd tune here to me. 1-0 to USA.
I counted 7 tunes in total, with the 1st being repeated at the end. I think the first [ and last ] jig is “The Laird O’Cockpen”. I also think the 4th is “My Wife’s A Wanton Wee Thing” [ "Battlefield Band " “Stand Easy” LP ]. I haven’t heard any of the rest of them before apart from “Ye Banks And Braes”, but Cathy’s already identified it.
That puts us up 2-1, mind you, we’re playing at hame, and away goals count double.

Hi Kenny

I would say that the first and last tune was “when she came ben she bobbit”, but cockpen gets his mention in the song.

Cathy is right about Ye Banks and Braes, the first bars of the tune sound like the start of Nelson Mandela and it put me off on the wrong track.

Maybe I can make up for it with this one, tune 5 is the tune to Craigieburn Wood

David

PS I can hear Mairi Campbell singing a song to tune 3 in my head, but I can’t make out the blasted words :swear:

I know that the first and last tune is Lady Catherine Bruce’s Reel (which is actually a jig). I have the notes and I play them.
What is the second tune, I wonder? Or maybe there is a way to find out if it is a known set? Or every band chooses their own set of tunes?

Tune number 2 is a Scottified version of Paddy O’Rafferty.

or maybe even the original ? Who knows ? Well spotted, “Baglady”. Question for Louigi - where did this come from, and who are the players ? And how do you "know " that the first and last tune is “Lady Catherine Bruce” ?

It would help if you could tell us where the clip is from.

I believe this is a set of jigs that can be played for the dancing of Lady Cathrine Bruce’s Reel. Meaning that you have the name of the dance not necessarily the name of the tune.

And since this is a Scottish Country Dance you may get a quicker ID of the tunes on a Scottish Trad forum.

I know that it is Lady Catherine Bruce because I found sheet music of Lady Catherine Bruce and it matches. =)
The original mp3 came from someone who just has lots of Celtic stuff, so I don’t know who the players are. Also, it is indeed a tune that is played to the Lady Catherine Bruce dance. Hm. Well. Anyway, thanks for helping me out!
