Kornog´s first recording

I am trying to get Kornog´s firs recording, not the one titled “Premiere”. It seems that there is another one recorded previously, and I’m not sure that Veillon featured on it because at the begining the band was integrated by the other 3 members and at some point Jean Michel joined them.
So, any news about this?

Illegal ways to get it are welcome too.
I’m jokin, I’m joking…

Regards.

It’s called simply, “Kornog” from 1983.

Title is mis-typed here, but it was released on Green Linnet (Out of Print):

http://www.gemm.com/search.pl?&artist=KORNOG&title=KORMOG&mi=S09STU9HQ0RLT1JOT0c=

Just make sure you don’t go for Korong (which would not be Kor-rect, but Kor-wrong).

Oh wait! - Did you try Amazon (in stock)? From $3 used to under $15 new, or $8.99 for digital download of MP3s.

Oh, looks like the group formed in 1980, and JMV joined them before the recordings started. He’s listed in the liner notes.

I know the C&F forum can be helpful, but using Google was easier for me than pulling the CD.

Kevin Krell

I have that CD, the title is correct, “KORONG”, but this one was recorded in year 2000, actually is the last one Kornog made.

Still need a new clue!

OK, let’s try again.

The band name is “Kornog”. The 1st CD has the same title as the band name., as spelled.

The group reformed recently, with certain members, and that newer CD is “Korong” - see the difference in the spelling (2nd ‘o’ and the ‘n’ in a swapped position from the band name)? Also note the different album cover on Amazon.

Got all your clues, now? I did pull their discography (on Wiki [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kornog ] ), and then physically looked at the albums I have here, and my info is correct.

Kevin, the information is almost correct.
You are right about the info, but if you click the link to Amazon the Cd that appears is Korong, the one made in 2000, not the one recorded in 1983.
Check the track list and you will see.

Kevin, that wiki-discography looks to me like an extract from J-MV’s discography - 'cos it sure ain’t Kornog’s! I mean, Pennou Skoulm were/are a different band (save they share J-MV and several other members - see also J-M’s Groupes page). I wonder if the root of Smoro’s query lies in the third Kornog album on that list being “Kornog IV”? Was there another album after (or before) “Premiere” on which J-M didn’t feature, hence it isn’t in his discography? Were they just playing games with titles and “IV” is actually “3”? One could do worse than to ask Jean-Michel himself by e-mail via his website - he will answer eventually, if maybe not forthwith. He’d be sure to know why the albums had those titles and whether there was another one he wasn’t on.

A Google search on “Kornog” brings up this useful summary
and this from Green Linnet.
This link offers another band-biog and makes a strange reference to four albums made during the original period of the group as well as Korong - but the text contains various typos and bits of garbled English, so one may suspect poor proof-reading/bad translation in whatever proportions… However, the discography on the same site is more revealing - and also suggests garbled info as it does not tally with J-MV’s listings, which I would take to be definitive.

I found this about the non-Green Linnet album:

“Kornog IV”, recorded in 1987 and remixed in July 2000, conveys all the freshness and mystery of Kornog’s musical lyricism : a music which is at once noble and modest, scintillating and majestic like the relentlessly rising and descending sea around the coasts of Brittany.

Three extracts of “Kornog IV” (With kind permission from An Naer Produksion) :

Air du Mene/Ronde de Loudéac
Suite des Montagnes
Ton ar Marc’h Houarn Kaer

So, I’m not sure this really gets the OP any further… but why (oh why :poke: ) hasn’t he done this simple surfing himself? Not that I’m unhappy to have learnt a bit more than I knew from J-MV’s site… but even allowing for possible language issues, this ain’t rocket-science research! FWIW, I’ve never heard the original period Kornog albums, be there 3 or 4… though I have a copy of Korong - which, much as I love Jean-Michel’s playing, I don’t play much - I’m afraid Jamie McMenemy’s “singing” just isn’t my cup of tea!

Let´s go to the facts.
Kornog known works, in cronological order:
-Premiere, Live in Minneapolis
-Ar Seizh Avel (On Seven Winds)
-Kornog IV
-Korong

If “Kornog IV” is the fourh CD it has to exist one before “Premiere”, actually the second one.
This mystery album is mentioned on Soig Siberil discography, Jean Michel-Veillon discography and some Kornog discographys, but for some reason is not for sale or available in any shop or company. It was recorded in 1982 or 1983, but if you google “Kornog 1893” all that you get are links to the well known Kornog albums but not the mistery one.
I think it only was released in vinyl and tape and never in CD. I think is discontinued too, not available any more. Why? May be Kornog was not happy with it or some other reason.
But I have the hope that someone in this planet has that album. It has to exists any copy in some place, but for sure not in Amazon or Green Linnet, I checked several times.

Anyway thanks for your comments and investigation work, all the help is much appreciated.
S.

I’ve never heard or seen that first album myself. I have “Première” on cassette, plus the two Galorn albums that I believe were Jean-Michel’s first recordings with any band, from 1979 and 1980, as well as some of his later experiments (e.g., “Den,” which was basically a Breton version of Moving Hearts).

For a trip down memory lane from the early 1980s, check out these recordings of radio broadcasts from 1982:

http://archives-sonores.blogspot.com/2010/06/bretagne-1982.html

This includes Alan Kloatr playing the wooden flute, some singing from Yann-Fanch Kemener (going by his French name of Jean-François Quemener), Patrick Molard playing pipes, and highlights from the Lorient festival that year.

More about this:
In Soig Siberl web site (http://www.soigsiberil.com/?RUB=discographie&LANG=fr) it appears first Kornog CD recorded in 1982, acouple of years before “Premiere”

There are other references in the web.

Yes, recorded on the Excalibur label and distributed by Arfolk – there are lots of sites selling old vintage LPs from Arfolk, but as far as I can tell none of them have the Kornog LP. A seach for “Kornog”+“Excalibur” returns a lot more results but I haven’t looked through them.

Yeah Brad, this one seems a bit tough to get.
Thanks.

At least we have the LP cover:
http://prehistoiredufolk.free.fr/images/Kornog.BUR811.jpg

and track list, in italian, but here it is:
http://folkvinyls.xoom.it/agronca/folk/siberil1983.htm

Right, Soig Siberil’s discography gives (in chronological order):
1982 - Kornog - Kornog - the missing/mystery, apparently eponymous album. (But not in fact pre/sans J-MV as he’s clearly on it on Smoro’s Italian track-list link. I wonder why it isn’t on his own discography?)
1983 - Kornog - Encore (??? is this a title-misremembered “Premiere”???)
1985 - Kornog - Ar Seizh avel
1986 - KORNOG - IV
and of course Soig wasn’t on Korong.

So “Korong” is deliberate, not an accidental metathesis?

I suppose the next offering will be Koright. Or as some wag on Mudcat suggested, Korndog!

I think the title “Korong” refers to a lake in Brittany where Veillon lived at that time.

Aha … second entry: http://tourismekreizbreizh.com/article.php?id_article=89

OK, I humbly stand corrected - they’ve made a hash out of it. My mistake for trying to have a go at it at 4 in the morning. Doesn’t help that Amazon has different CD covers, either.

Please don´t worry. This is not an school exam! Everybody he try to get information about this kind of stuff, but sometimes is confusing.
Look that the cover CD that appears is Amazon is not right neither the track list. It sounds like a strategic and comercial trick. You know. Am I too bad for thinking something like that?

Now we’re getting somewhere. It turns out “Excalibur” is a typo and it’s really “Escalibur.”

Here’s a photo of the cover and track listing:
