Having two three-piece low D – a custom Alba “Broken Arrow” and an Yvon Le Coant blackwood, I wanted a good case to carry them around securely, whether in a backpack, or kept warm tucked under my jacket when motorcycling.
• I took a piece of leather, premium upholstery grade, of good thick cowhide, with its inside left rough (suede-like) so it didn’t need a soft cloth liner
• cut it to 24 x 10 in. So, folding the main part as a square (10 x 10 in.) leaves a long enough cover flap.
• The stitching --one seam in-between the three pockets, and a double seam each side–was just asked from the local shoemender. He also punched in the brass eyelet, which serves to attach a leather lace.
It will hold any 3-piece low whistle, or flute. The flap is simply folded over, then the whole packs is rolled sideways, and secured by the lace.
The thick leather makes it pretty rigid, and its creases and pleats act as shock-absorbers when it’s rolled up and fastened.
One compartment always ends up too long for an easy reach to the shortest section of the instrument. Just slip in a empty 35mm film plastic box as a spacer. Other such canisters, left open as sleeves may be used to protect delicate ends like on tuning assemblies. The head of the Alba low D pictured fits right in.
It is simple–I wanted a K.I.S.S. minimalist design–but versatile and I believe it looks good if not exactly roccoco 
Pricewise? With reclaimed leather, all depends on your own needlework talents… or the shoemender’s.
