I know these people personally, met them in India in 86 and remained close.

I was friends with her husband Michael, who died in 1999. He wanted to say
goodbye to her before he died (54), but the Burmese government wouldn’t let
him in. Said they would be glad to let Suu out. Of course they would never
let her back in. He died without seeing her.
I guess this has been for me one of the saddest stories in the world.
