Lately my PC keyboard has been dropping the letter “n” from time to time. If it was “q” I wouldn’t care much, but “n” is pretty necessary. If I’m lucky and I see the error, I go back and put the letter in, hitting the key more firmly and deliberately. (So naturally, for the sentences I just typed, everything came out perfectly, all letters included).
The keyboard is a nice Logitech wireless one which I’d rather not just trash. Is there any simple/effective/safe way I can restore the usefulness of the letter “n”?
Depends on what’s wrong.
The contacts are little rubberized things. You can try to shake it, and if there’s a bit of something blocking the connection, then maybe it will shake loose. Compressed air might help too.
It could also be a broken trace and that’s a lot harder to fix.
You can take them apart and wipe the contacts and the traces, but you have to totally disassemble them. I haven’t had much luck with such cleaning. Usually I spend two hours taking them apart, cleaning them, and putting them back together and they still don’t work.
I think demerit points should be given when there is talk of a keyboard by a musician and it’s still a computer keyboard.
How about if I call it a “typing thingie”?
you could give ignoring him a shot, it’s much easier than fixing one of the modern keyboards
My laptop had some cruft in the keyboard.
It would migrate, so that one week I’d have
the problem you’re describing on, say, “b”,
then the next week it would be on “p”.
I suspect that’s your problem.
If it’s easy to take the plastic casing off,
you might then be able to clean under the
key with a Q-tip. If not, you can try having
someone else hold it upside down and using
a bit of canned air, sticking the straw up
between the keys.
It’s probably a gremlin. Put it in the dishwasher and run it on the antibacterial cycle just to be sure. ![]()

I’ll just go off and remove the hook from my lip now, if you don’t mind.

In the meantime, my keyboard seems to have fixed itself.
Only too glad to help. ![]()
Seriously, though, this sort of thing will happen to me from time to time - usually it’s the same sets of letters when it does - and I am never quite sure if it’s the keyboard or just me and lazy fingers, so I had no idea what to offer for advice. Like your case here, in mine it usually seems to sort itself out after a day. And I still never know if it’s the keyboard or me.
