Key of E anyone?

I can vouch for the O’Brien E. I have one of his E whistles (from his whistle set) and it’s everything I could have wanted.

Syn has a great High E I had one as part of a set once, that was my favorite of the set. I can’t really play any thing above Eb because of the size of my hands. I have a Cheiftian High E I would let go for $45 if you are interested shoot me a PM or Email.

I have a tunable Overton low E that Colin made for me last year that is absolutely spectacular. But I had to wait 4 months to get it!

I also have a Humphrey high E that records very nicely.

I’ve seen A’s mentioned a couple of times in this thread for playing in the key of E. This really surprises me but good on ya if you can do it proficiently. I personally rarely use an A to play in the key of E. I would use a B whistle for that. Of course, if you went with a Humphrey, you could get an A with an extra B tubing.

Flogging Molly play in Eb? Which song? Cause, to my knowledge, they play almost exclusively in D. Some songs C, and some tunes in I’m thinking E natural such as the solo fiddle part in Black Friday Rule where she plays O’Keefe’s Slide I believe it’s called.

Now that I think about it I’m pretty sure I was thinking of Dropkick Murphys. They had whistle tabs on their site I think that I couldn’t play with my D or something. I guess I just had in my mind it was a practical whistle but I’m thinking B and C sound more efficent next to D.

I have a Burke Aluminum low E that is really nice. It is sooo.. easy to play. It has a little chiff in the low register and plays very easily in the upper register.

I also have a Sindt D that has an interchangeble E tube that John made for me. It was a good addition for a little extra money. Unfortunatly the waiting list for one is 11 or 12 months now!

Humphrey makes a narrow bore D that also has an Eb and E tube that you can buy. I would probably try one of those since the price is good, low waite and excellent craftsmanship. Gary has a 30 day return policy so there is really no risk if you don’t like it. I am sure you will though!

Well, in my experience, the Dropkick Murphys play in several keys. The majority being D, but they’ve played in F, Eb, C, and Bb. When I say that, those are all the songs that I know and play my whistle to of there collection. I’m sure they play in other keys as well. I don’t have their latest album that just recently came out, and I personally don’t like it. They’ve lost their edge, and not for the better. I like the old days with Mike McColgan. Like, Do or Die, Their Singles Collection, (volume 1) that’s some of their best music in my opinion. Ah well, later guys.

I actually like jamming with my Pouges the most, some things like “Jesse James” have simple but sweet sounding whistle parts. And D is the only key I’m capible of playing.

Hoover, O’Brien, Bingamon, and Burke are some that I know who make whistles in high E. Oh, and Susato, of course. I think all of the above (Except O’Brien) could make a Low E also.

To that fine list should be added John Sindt. I have a Sindt and a Burke E, and they are both fine whistles. I am also real fond of my Mack Hoover Whitecap E-Flat, but that is a different story–or key, at any rate.

Tom D.

If you want an E whistle to play A tunes (and I do too…I have a Susato that’s been tweaked and it does alright, but is a bit loud) you may want to try playing those tunes on the D whistle. Sometimes its just an occasional G# that you need to half hole or skip entirely, and it can be doable.

If you want to put money into it, there are whistle makers out there who will put a G# key on a whistle for just that purpose.

Tyg

Here’s just a wee note on the side:
