I went on my annual pilgrimage
to The Whistle Shop. Thom
showed my a multicolored kerry pro
which is part of his ongoing
garage sale–it was 50 dollars,
and I bought it.
It’s a very good low D, IMHO,
regardless of price.
It’s in tune, it’s tunable, it’s
expressive,
it sounds just
fine, I like it better than
my Chieftain, which costs
more than twice as much. Also
it has good volume and it’s light.
Much impressed.
I just went to Lark in the Morning this past week and picked up a regular Kerry Low D, I tried the Shaw and the Howard, but like you I was very impressed with the quality of tone and how easily it played with such little breath. Although I am forced to use piper’s grip I found it to be a great purchase.
Yes, the kerry pro is underated–seems
a much better low D than far more
expensive whistles. I played one
once at Music Folk here in St. Louis
and it was unplayable, which is
why I underated them; however
Thom tells me that KPs are
routinely good–so I had the
misfortune to play the exception.
Jim, when you say “kerry pro”, are you sure that’s what you mean? Kerry Pros are the all-metal Overton look-alikes, and they are about as expensive a low whistle as they come, while “regular” Kerry whistles are the cheap, plastic mouthpiece type.
As far as I know, only the plastic mouthpiece Kerry whistles have been made “in color”.

Jens, you must be right. My mistake.
The whistle I bought has a plastic
mouthpiece and a (multicolored) alloy tube.
Kerry it is! I have a Chieftain
alloy non-tunable low D–I don’t
know where that stands in the
scheme of names (costs about 130
at The Whistle Shop, anyway),
and I like the plastic mouthpiece
jobby better; liked the
more expensive one, too.
