Kerry Low D or Dixon Low D

I hope poor Dale forgives me for this …

I’m finally back home after the holidays and am taking the advice of several members on the board in relation to buying my first Low D.

Here’s my quandry. Should I go with the Kerry Low D or the Dixon Low D? They’re both within $5 of each other on the Whistle Shop site.

Is the quality pretty much the same?

Agreed. A Nobel Peace Prize for Dale, and a bit more wisdom for me in the future. Personally, I’d rather put off WWIII for as many years as possible. (-;

The whistles are apples and oranges.
The Dixon is pvc, it has a very
nice, sweet sound, and it’s easy
to play. The Kerry is a real honker,
it has a plastic head and an alloy
body. It’s less easy to play, more demanding
windwise,
but not especially difficult.
It sounds like alloy whistles
sound. I like them both but
I bought the Kerry,
which is more like your traditional
low D–sort of in the Chieftain,
Overton alloy constellation.
I like it better than the Chieftain,
in fact (which I like); also
I was after volume.

Both are tunable, the Dixon more so.

I like the Kerry but I tweaked mine (extra teflon tape under the mouthpiece, dull the blade slightly, and take a 1/8 to 1/4 inch off the tubing on the mouthpiece side to make it more tunable)and it sounds as good as it’s more expensive cousins (Chieftains, Kery Pros and Overtons). Plus I like plastic rather than metal in my mouth.

Hmm… I’ll trys this. The Blade does have a sharp upwards edge. Sort of a seam from press-injection, I guess. I might try and shave or file this dull…

Yes, the Kerry is remarkable.
It performs in class of the top
alloy whistles, I think, and it’s
less than half the price.

How do you dull the blade?

With extreme care!

I use a nail file, 1 or 2 strokes is usually enough.
