Just when you figure out someone's taste in whistles

. . .they go and surprise you.

Ever one to bring my newest acquisitions to my whistling friends (who are all amused by my constant buy/sell habit (more buy than sell!)) I brought my new Elfsongs (D/C) to session yesterday, expecting Tom to try it, shrug and give it back with something along the lines of “Nothing like the one I have (the Weasel)” or “The one you play is better”. . .

He played it for 10-15 minutes (including my current fave tune ‘In the Mood’) and liked it very much, from the tuning to the quiet tone. This is high praise from someone who was pretty hung up on Soodlum and Gens.

Then I gave it to my neighbor in session Ralph Sweet. . .who also thought it was a very nice whistle (with the one comment being the weak bell note). This guy is VERY hard to please, so consider it high high praise.

I cant count the number of times my taste in whistles has changed and Ive only been playing since last Dec. I have an E/D Elfsong combo and find the bell note on the D tube to be a bit week also. Not so the E tube. Nice balance. I don`t play them much because of their purity I suppose but who know I might drag them out of the case today.
Hmmm…In the Mood. Now that is going to be running through my brain all day. Thanks a lot. But if its in my brain it will soon come out of my whistle, in Eb that is. :slight_smile:

That tune is known as ‘The Darktown Strutters’ Ball’. And yep it’s a blast to play…has a few accidentals in it.

i’m not saying my tast will never change, but uptill now it never did with
burke composite&brass. when i feel to heavy from work, it’s usually brass,with it’s happy and sweet notes. when i’ve been to much in my head, it’s the composite low D, for grounding.
it just depends on my mood.
