Being new I am in search of the whistle with the tone of the ones I am hearing as I search the world of MP3’s…One I have come across and the only selection I have from her is Joanie Madden I think called Women of Ireland. Is that a low d whistle?
As are most that are used when recording? I await your enlightenment…

Joannie plays O’Riordans… however, there is much reverb and other sweetening effects on her recordings that it’s quite hard to tell the true sound of her whistles.

After reading one of the other posts just now. I went to the elfsong whistle site. That clip on there is definitely a good tone
in my opinion. Personal preference only works for one person though =-). I went to see Father Son and Friends last week. The son plays an O’Riordan’s…It is nice but definitely sounds different than the mp3 i have of the Madden song.
Well, that’s the thing, really. It’s so hard to tell what an instrument’s really like from a recording…not only because of the various enhancements, but because…well, just because a whistle sounds wonderful in the hands of a professional doesn’t mean it’s going to sound at all good in mine . I tend to go a lot more on what people say about the general properties of various whistles (not necessarily on what individuals like or dislike, since tastes can vary considerably, but on what their comments tell me I’m likely to like or dislike about it, based on my preferences). The more impressions the better. So far that’s stood me in very good stead…and it’s why I find “what do you think about whistle X?” thread here so very useful.
