Has anyone got any advice for a new owner of a bamboo flute? It looks beautifully crafted and I can get some notes out it but I’m wondering if maybe I’ve bitten off my than I can chew. Do you need a different approach or technique with bamboo or is it just a matter of getting to know the instrument? Is there anything I need to do differently?

It should just be a matter of spending time on the flute. A bamboo F flute will be a much easier adjustment than a bamboo D flute where the hole size and spread will be larger than on a conical flute.

Does the flute have one or two holes at the top. A Di-Zi, I believe it’s called has two holes, the topmost you blow into, and the second you cover with rice paper or, reed paper. The ebrochure is tricky. I start flat, than rotate the flute till I get it. Myself, I want to get a chinese flute that isn’t transverse, so that it is a little easier to play. I have a tibetian flute, too, and it simply has the one hole that you blow into. The only thing, though, is that it is tough to play without overblowing a bit so that it sounds hollow.
