Well, here are a few more bands/albums/sites that might appeal to all y’all:
At First Light - the album by John McSherry & Mike McGoldrick; it’s whistle and guitar stuff mostly, following the irish traditional form/structure, but you can tell it’s beyond that, becoming something else.
On thesession.org thread about Millish, Steph - who sounds like he/she knows the bandmembers personally - confirmed that John & Mike were big influences on the band; it’s probably this album in particular (I haven’t heard McGoldrick’s Morning Rory album, and Fused, I think, goes in a slightly different direction.
To a certain extent, Joe McKenna's album, The Irish Low Whistle is like that at times. The album as a whole is inconsistent, a bit all over the place, but there are some tracks that clearly lay the foundation for things to come: the arrangements and instrumentation, in particular - if you listen to the first track, Colonol Fraser: the guitar work (it’s John Doyle from Flook - doh!) and the bass (Trevor Hutchinson from Lunasa - double doh!) make for a pleasantly familiar sound.
Speaking of Trevor Hutchinson, he recently produced two albums from a great new band which, sadly, has no whistle. But their flute player played on the official Lord of the Rings soundtrack by Howard Shore (I think only Return of the King, though), and that’s gotta count for something!
Their name’s Grada, and apparently they’re The Latest Thing on the hip 'n happening Irish folk scene (note, not trad
Check out their website for some great tracks (scroll down).
The coolest downloadable track of Grada’s is called Cathain. It was written by the Gaelic poet, and Kila frontman, Liam O’Maonla. You may like to check Kila out as well, by the way.
Right you, lot… that should keep you busy for a while. Off you go!

John Doyle is the guitarist for Flook, now? When did that happen? Last I knew it was Ed Boyd, or something like that.
All the Best, Tom
Wow! I realy like William’s stuff… especially enjoyed “the Imp’s Limp”… thanks for sharing that site!
I’m still trying to download some Millish…
Oooh, loving Nicholas Williams… yum. Foxhunter is awesome!!
The other stuff is taking quite a while to download… But I’m sure it’s nice too. Hm, loving the flute, guys…
The cool thing is that Nicholas William is having a session every monday only five minutes from my appartment, mouhaha! ![]()
Yeah, I just figured out he lives in Montreal!!! Wow, it’s such a small world… Az, is that the session at L’Utopik?
Yes exactly, Utopik it is. It’s a very crowded session, but the best in the area usually show up there, so it’s worth going from time to time.
Tom - you’re absolutely right, he’s recorded four albums with Solas, not Flook.
mea culpa!

by the way Q, you must get all the solo stuff by mike mcgoldrick, and also at first light.
Question about Nicholas Williams. I noticed he has two cd’s. Can anybody recommend one over the other? Thanks.
All the Best,
Tom
Tom,
The Crooked River’s the only one I know. Haven’t heard any Tuq tracks, (Tuq’s the name of the group, btw), so if anybody does get that album, a full report-back would be muchly appreciated!
Amar - I emailed a guy I used to know at Vertical records for more info on Mike McGoldrick’s next album - which was supposed to be released sometime over the next month or so, but he’s not there anymore it seems and the only news I could get was that it’s now only due out next year

bollocks…fused2 should have been out this spring!! ![]()
Thanks, I may just have to order Crooked River.
Thanks for taking the time to offer your listening recommendations, Q.
I’ve not heard of Grada and will perhaps check them out.
I’ve got At First Light and Fused, and while I liked the former, I was disappointed by the latter album. I’m completely non- “pure drop” and am fascinated by a good fusion of musical genres, but I just felt something was off about Fused. Maybe the fusion of styles was not convincing enough, maybe the melodies were not strong enough, I dunno.
I have the Kila album with “lemonade” in its title. Haven’t listened to it for a while. If I recall correctly, there are some really nice tracks in there, but not every track caught my fancy.
of course there is phil hardy, i like his music, irtrad with a twist to it. ![]()
Okay, last recommendation (I’ve run out!): there’s a British banjo player calls himself Leon Hunt. He’s just released a solo album that includes guest spots by Mike McGoldrick, Ed Boyd and John Joe Kelly.
Best of all, on his website, http://www.leonhunt.com , you can download a quicktime movie of Leon + Mike, Ed & John Joe playing a lovely set. Be warned; the server it’s hosted on is giving TERRIBLE speeds, and constantly disconnects. It took me about 5 hours to download the 26mb version using a broadband connection and a download manager that reinstates connections when they break. If you don’t have any luck, let me know and I’ll upload my copy to a pet server.
Session tonight - hooray!
My Flook Live! CD arrived today, double hooray!
(Blackberry Blossom / Independent is flabbergasting, innit?)
yayyyyyyyy, Q, check out “the dub reel”…i haven’t ever heard a better interpretation than that one…it’s mind-boggling…
here’s the next recommendation:

great stuff.
Sometimes I forget that not everyone knows about Millish. We’ve been listening for years now…
If you live anywhere in driving distance of Ann Arbor, Millish is going to be featured at the Al Purcell Irish Music Festival in Ann Arbor October 2nd. Millish has a short set at the Saturday night concert, and Millish’s piper/whistler (Tyler Duncan aka bustapipuh on this board) and guitar player (Jesse Mason) are teaching teaching workshops during the day. (Loretto Reid is teaching the whistle/flute workshop.)
Also, to tie this thread together, I believe Tyler is driving to NYC right now for a gig tonight opening for Flook. I don’t know the name of the band he’s playing with, but Isaac Alderson is involved. (When I talked to Tyler last night, he didn’t even know what instrument(s) he’d be playing for the gig.)
Millish have an EP for sale right now. Their album is nearly finished, but Tyler is waiting to get new reeds he’s ordered from someone in Ireland before they record the last couple of tracks.
