I have always wondered how do you go to the second octave with the uilliean pipes. It has always bugged me because every workshop fails to mention how to do this technique. Thanx

The concept is the same as with whistles, you overblow into the seond octave. Only the technique involved differs, being a dry-reed instrument, it most often requires the bell of the chanter to be closed on the leg of the piper (with some advanced techniques being the exception i.e. popping), and assuming you have a well behaved reed the jump to the second octave should take only a small increase in bag pressure. Hope this helps, though it is just a basic description.

What workshops are you attending where they fail to explain such a basic part of ‘how to play the UP’ ?
MW do you have pipes, or was this just a question out of curiousity? (nothing wrong with that). Perhaps you have been listening in at UP workshops where this is too basic to be covered in the class.
