Hello music lovers - there will be a new music festival in Kansas City, MO (USA) this Spring. May 20-21 - the Jubilee of Acoustic Music will be held on the campus of Longveiw Community College in Lee’s Summit. Workshops will be offered in Hammered and Mountain Dulcimer, Fiddle, Mandolin, Autoharp, Banjo, Bass, Irish Flute and Whistle, Guitar and Hamonica.

Looks fantastic! The price is right, it’s within easy driving distance. The workshops look good. Should be fun.
The only question is, which workship? Whistle? Flute? Mandolin?
Hope to meet in person some of the people I’ve only corresponded with.

Jim - I’ll most likely (about 99% sure) be there. Price is good, location is great for me (about 20 minutes from my front door), but who the heck is this Chris Carr person doing the flute/whistle courses?

Chris Carr is the flute/whistle player for Shenanigans, a local KC celtic band. He also plays for a new band, Residence Rules here in KC.
He was supposed to play with Joanie Madden at the first Irish Fest, before it got rained out. The guy is good! (of course, I have a bias because he’s also a friend).
He has been playing since he was 8 or 9 years old. I’ll have his bio posted on the web site as soon as I get time. (couple of days at least)

Michael - thanks for the information on Chris…the name just didn’t ring a bell, but names are not my strong point. Hasn’t Shenanigans been around for quite some time? I seem to recall seeing them down at Murphy’s Landing back in the late 80s & early 90s but without a flute player back then. Then again, I could be thinking of Maid in the Middle. Just a few too many years have passed since then to be totally clear on these issues. 
Thanks for putting this event together - it sounds great! And, as always, I could use help with my ornamentation.
Do you know of any active sessions in the area these days?

Thanks for the tips. I think now that US 71 is four lanes much of the way, the trip from Fort Smith up to KC is only about 5 hours or so.
I’ll definitely have a look. If not that, maybe I can come to the Irish Festival! 
Just looked again and noticed that Linda Brockinton is giving some of the Mountain Dulcimer seminars. If you ever get a chance to jam with her, please do! She’s as good at jamming as she is at performing. 
Is Forth Smith 5 hours? Two weekends ago we drove down from KC to Tulsa in about 4:30 and that included about a 1/2 hour stop. 4 lanes and 75 mph sure speeds up a trip!

Mapquest puts the total time at 5:45 and the distance a little short of 300 miles. However, they still show you having to drive through town in Springdale, Rogers and Bentonville instead of taking the 4-lane 65/70 MPH loop to Bella Vista, so your estimate may be closer to the truth. It would be interesting to find out.
Mapquest also puts the total time from KC to Tulsa at 4:45, but they have you taking I-35 from Olathe, then US 59 and 169 to Tulsa. Is this the way you went, or did you take US 71 down to Joplin, then I–44 to Tulsa?
I went down 71 to 44. That Mapquest thinks it’s so smart…but 4 lanes with high speed are a lot quicker. Also, Mapquest doesn’t take into account that 44 in Oklahoma is all of 75 mph which means about 79 to me…
Half the time when I use mapquest I end up mapping from my house to another city and from that other city to my final destination because it wants to send me on two lane highways or on routes I know from experience are not as quick as the one I want to take.
Fort Smith is a tad bit further south than I recalled…when did you all move the city on me?

I think it determines the best route solely on miles traveled, and does not take into account speed limits, lanes, loops, etc.
Well, with the Ark. River to the north, east and west, that’s the only way it could move!
