"John Stewart, dead in San Diego on Jan 19
JOHN STEWART of the KINGSTON TRIO wrote the iconic hit “Daydream Believer” for the MONKEES, which was a hit years later for ANNE MURRAY. His song “Runaway Train” was a country hit for ROSEANNE CASH, and JOAN BAEZ recorded his song “Strange Rivers” in 1992. He recorded a notable duet with NANCI GRIFFITH of his song “Sweet Dreams.” Stewart fronted the KINGSTON TRIO for six years, 1961-1967, after the band and its founder, DAVE GUARD, had recorded their biggest hit, “Tom Dooley.” Stewart took over when Guard left to pursue different musical ambitions. Stewart recorded 13 albums with the Kingston trio, and more than 40 after that, as a solo act.
John Stewart continued to tour as a solo act and with his band until his death early Saturday morning in a San Diego hospital at age 68, with his family at his bedside. The apparent cause of death was a stroke or brain aneurysm, which occurred in the hospital. Stewart was said to be suffering from Altzheimers for the past several years, as well."
