Hi guys,I was at the At First Light gig the other night in London.Mike McGoldrick was not playing which allowed us to see John McSherry in all his glory.The combination of John and Donal O’Connor on fiddle powered on from the first note with the driving force of Tony Byrn on guitar.They are without exception one of the foremost groups around.They seem to have re-invented trad with so much soul and feel ,you can feel the gernerations behind them smilling.Needless to say that they were not allowed to leave the stage at the end as the crowd was near hysterical.
If you ever get the chance to see them in this combi,don’t miss it.

John has to be the one of the most under-rated/under-appreciated irish musicians out there (at least from N. Americas perspective). I hope these clips help to let people know that there is no better piper/whistle player out there.
I’ve spent many hours trying to learn what he does (from record and from him), and can say first hand, DAMN THAT SHIT IS HARD.

I know what Danny means, I hope. W/out Mike, it’s not ‘At First Light’, which is what it is beacause of the combo of Flutes/whistles/pipes together.
John is stunning, simply stunning, whatever zone you live in.

…the music, of course…and John’s mighty piping. I know it’s not the same with a band member missing, but I would think the music is somewhat larger than the performers…and the music is outstanding.
Also, when McGoldrick isn’t there, you can hear what John is really doing in full detail. Every cut or tap is there for a reason. He has a completely unique system of ornementation that would benefit any student of pipes or whistles to listen to very very closely.
It is certainly fun to listen to.
