Question: How much does the joints swell during extended playing sessions? The only Dogwood flute I have experience with swells at least as much as boxwood, if not more, so perhaps John sealed the bore to prevent this?

you answered yourself pretty much.. Indeed John selaed the bore, he did it when he re reamed the bore after one year of solid playing. the timber is lovely looking and very stable, even after long sessions..
