More sharks were spotted Wednesday close to the shoreline of New York’s Long Island, a day after authorities closed the beach to swimmers because the 18-foot sharks were seen lurking near the water’s edge.
West Hampton Dunes Police Sgt. Tim Turner had received reports of sharks in the water on southeastern Long Island at around 3 p.m. Tuesday. There were about 50 people on the beach at the time.
Of course the general populace can’t be expected to know this without looking it up, but if those are indeed Threshers then aside from the highly unusual daytime sighting (Threshers tend to be nocturnal), they are fish-eaters and cannot have accounted for the seal remains reported, and being timid of humans (and having teeth too small to tackle large prey anyway), pose little real danger unless provoked. We’d probably taste bad to them in the unlikely event of getting bit, and you’re more likely to sustain serious injury being whacked by that tail distinctive of Threshers.
That being said, I think I’d hold off from taking a dip just in case. Besides, there’s that seal carcass: that sort of thing is more indicative of the possible presence of Great Whites.
When I chased geese it was fun. Driving that massive IH 4X4 slip-sliding through a muddy field of freshly sprouted winter wheat, or rye, or barley to protect those crops from nasty marauding geese. I’m telling ya I protected some grain fer them farmers.
