An impulsive early morning ebay dabble led to me winning an antique eight keyed flute by Jerome Thibouville Lamy. An extensive search hasn’t come up with too much information on this maker nor the quality of his flutes. Does anyone have any experience of the playing/build quality of his flutes?
Didn’t know they made flutes. Interesting. JTL was a larger shop that’s known more for their violins. Nothing high end, but pretty nice trade fiddles. A friend of mine has one, it actually sounds great together with the flute.
Might not have been JTL who made the flute, maybe it was made for them by a flute maker and branded with the shops name. Isn’t that possible? I remember hearing of such things in the past.
Aah, very true and quite right Henke. I’d forgotten about that.
JT-L (note the hyphen), flourished in Paris from somewhere around 1867 to after 1950 as makers of woodwind, brass, strings etc etc - just about anything really. They had agencies in London and New York and about 5 factories employing 1000 workers and using the new-fangled electricity. Jerome himself was born into a massive woodwind-making dynasty in La Couture, the region renowned for flutemakers in 1833, died 1902.
So, big, very big!
