I've got serious trigger finger-can anyone help?

Yep, my thumb won’t bend (without me screaming, that is). Trigger finger is a condition where a lump of scar tissue makes it so the tendon (or whatever that is in there) can’t slide smootly through the sheath. I got it from over-playing the guitar. So, be careful. If you overdo and your joints start to hurt, back off before you do whatever I did that caused scar tissue to form. Because now I really can’t bend my thumb. And it’s very painful. Can’t play the harp anymore, either.

The good news is that I CAN play the whistle. That’s really great news, considering.

So, has anyone had this condition and cured themselves of it? If so, please tell me how you did it!

Boy, I’m really sorry to hear about your finger. But really glad that you told people here. People need to be aware that playing an instrument while having pain can lead to some very serious problems.

I can’t advise you about your finger. I wonder if your current doctor offers no treatment if maybe you might try to find someone who specializes in hand problems. From what I just read on the Internet it seems as though something might be able to be done.

Thank you again for pointing out to people that they need to deal with the problem as soon as something starts to hurt. Best wishes.

Hi Emrys.

Sad to hear about you finger, but glad to hear that you at least can play one instrument  . Not beeing able to play any instrument that would be a disaster.

About your finger I’m sure that something can be done.
My whife had a triggerfinger (the thumb, too), when she was a young girl (long before I got to know her), she had it operated and it works pretty good now. She’s when overworked and tired sometimes complaining that she can feel a little nuisance in her finger, but most of the time it works ok.
When I was a young man I remember that my grandmother had the same problem she too had surgery and the finger worked again. I’m not shure that she had as good a result as my wifes, but the finger was deffinitly much better after the operation than before.

Chear up  , play the music that you can play  . Visit the doctor, I’m shure that he will be able to help you  .

P. S. I hope that you can understand some of this  . English is not my native languice.

Kind of an odd coincidence, I wouldn’t have known about this condition, but it randomly came up in conversation with a senior friend of mine last week. She was telling me about her trigger finger problem. She had been almost unable to close all the fingers on her hand, but went to the doctor and he gave her a cortisone shot and it was almost back to normal. I don’t remember how often she said she had to have them–but it wasn’t too terribly often. Anyway, talk to your doctor, it sounds like something can be done!

OK, first there are people called hand therapists.
See one, I suggest.. These people specialize in just this sort of
thing, and, as they can’t perform surgery, give you
injections, etc they may know conservative things
to do that will help. Also they may give you
a better idea of what you’ve really got, which
may not be what you think.

Also there are orthopaedists who specialize in hands.
I do think specialists are a good idea. Also, if it were
me, I would start with conservative, non-invasive
remedies.

The web has a good number of sites on this sort of
thing, so you might do a search. The more you
know the more you know. But a specialist is the
place to go, IMO.

Also there is at least the possibility that your problem
is over use and will cure itself. But if it were me
I would definitely check it out–non-invasive first.

I used to play computer games a lot, i mean for HOURS without a break. one morning i found my thumb felt Frozen and i couldn’t bend it normally. i think i did it some damage and it’s still a bit ‘clicky’ now 8 years later if i do repetitive things for too long :sniffle:

i don’t play computer games anymore, music is my main hobby now
