Hello all… I had been happily playing whistles for awhile. I wasn’t playing to try and be in sessions or with any other groups but purely for my own enjoyment. After about a year of playing, I decided to switch to playing the Recorder. I reasoned that since I only play from sheet music (It’s not a crutch, I just enjoy it)
That if I could play in more keys with a more chromatic instrument, I could play a wider variety of tunes.
Well, after 7 months now, I found myself playing the recorder about as well as I had played the whistle. But something was missing however. Even though I was playing mostly the same type Aires, Ballads and Waltses that I had with the whistle, it seemed as though the ‘spark’ or enthusiasm just wasn’t there. Now the Recorder is a fine instrument, don’t get me wrong, but “Southwind” or “Suil a ruin” just seems “not right” on that instrument…
I’m also happy to still see this board doing well. Now I just need to remember how to get a clean tone out of this simple, wonderfull little tube with holes… and learn to half hole the sharps and flats while I’m at it. ![]()
Welcome back, Dream. I’ve had the same experience with the recorder. When I play popular tunes or American folk music, they sound just fine on the recorder. Irish tunes just seem to require a whistle however!
