In a press-release coinciding with the archive’s 21 st birthday, ITMA has announced that it will start making catalogues, database and other material (including Patsy Touhey cylinders) available on-line.
thanks Peter
been waiting along time for them to do something with their website, should be a great resource. i look forward to delving into it.
Parlophone Irish 78s from 1929. Includes piper Neilus O’Cronin playing The Hunt b/w The Banks of the Suir in complete form, unlike the flawed dubs I put up at the Internet Archive, which were from a 78 with a chipped side, thus could only be partially played back; and a new-to-me disc of Neilus: The Coulin b/w Harvest Home & The Sweep’s - those are the titles on the label, he also plays the Wexford and Dunphy’s in the middle of the medley. These are played on an Eb flute and F fife, respectively. He sounds like he spent some time in a fife band, very lively tongued triplets in the first tune’s turn. Piano not present, nice. Neilus played flute in the Rowsome Trio. ITMA has made available 8 other sides in this batch.
The Cronin recordings are good to have. The Patsy Touhey recordings have already been digitally remastered and included on NPU’s The Piping of Patsy Touhey CD - NPUCD001 - available from NPU.

Verrrrrry cool. ![]()
They had another batch for April Fool’s Day: Parlophone Irish 78s from 1930. Includes those recordings of some banjo player accompanied very faintly by Billy Andrews, for piping content. Sligo and Galway music make up the rest, plus the astounding puffing of Tipperary flautist William Cummins, and a couple of boxers from I’m not sure. For Sligo there’s a disc from Richard Brennan & Thomas Hunt, the jig recorded by Coleman and Morrison and called after Brennan is a very nice piping tune which we’ve all heard at sessions I imagine. In his manuscript Morrison dubbed it “The Tipsy Piper,” in fact. Our anthem.
Maids of Montcisco, on the other hand, he termed “The Drunken Piper.” These distinctions are critical. ![]()
I’m glad they fixed that, when I first saw that new page, there was a piping clip behind his link.
