Hi Everyone,
One of the tunes Mikie Smyth tought me was The Dusty Miller (a hop jig). However there was another tune in the set that he played, but for some reason I cannot remember the name of the tune. Does anyone by any chance have the music for this tune and could you possibly post it hear in notation form. As unfortunatly I only remeber the first few bars.

it starts with B quarter, Cnat eighth, D quarter Cnat eighth…
I think thats it. However (for your reference) the tune is played on “Water From The Well” (The Chieftains) Track 5. The jig is the second tune in a set of three.

I must have a bad pressing or something.
Whenever I choose “Dusty Miller” on the select song menu, it gives me some reels at Matt Molloys pub.
A very quick scan of the dvd fails to find it.

The CD notes for WFTW say that track 5 includes:
The Dusty Miller / The Ketch Called “Sullivan John” / Dowd’s Number 9

The confusion could be that I have the dvd.
Track 5 is called the Dusty Miller.
This yields 3 reels, the second of which is Dowd’s Number 9.
As far as I am aware Dowd’s Number 9 has only ever been a reel.
I’ll leave this one alone now as I’m not sure I’m helping.

Not at all, DL. The Chieftains seldom play more than 2 tunes of the same type in a set. Both Sullivan John and Dowd’s #9 are reels. The sets on this album (WFTW) are compiled by region of origin, so there’s all sorts of stuff mashed together.

Here’s the notes of the first bar A slide|B|G|C|B|D|D|E|. Or along those lines. The tune is a jig and has the following rythem strong (over emphysised), week, week.

The Walsh Book, page 64 (tune # 171) has it as a 9/8 slip jig attributed to S. Ennis. Lunasa has it on their “Merry Sisters of Faith” CD – track #9, the second tune after Scully Casey’s. The notation in Walsh is a bit different from some mentioned in earlier replies. Best,
