from the ebay ad:
i brought this flute to sweet heart flute co. he said its in tune and he thinks patrick olwell made it bambo nice with case thanks
Does not look like any of the Olwell bamboos I have seen and played.
As far as I know Patrick would only make flutes of a single node of bamboo,
the one on the pic has 3…
Does that have an end cap?
Aside from the fact that the listing appears a little hurried and erratic, I have an F Olwell and it looks nothing like that. The holes on mine are not offset like that. Also the embouchure cut is not up to the quality of mine. The quality of bamboo is not what I would imagine Patrick using. I would suggest that the seller contact Patrick in person rather than ask another flute maker to speculate on it’s origin (if he has even done that).
That is not an Olwell!
I have that flute’s smaller sibling in G.
I’m not certain, but I believe it was made by Woodsong ( http://www.woodsonginstruments.com/flutes.htm ).
The one I have is a fair player (not great, just a noodler), but is made from bamboo with nice thick walls.
Ditto planxty. If that stick’s a cousin of my F, we’re talking about one strange family tree for all the reasons listed above (including the endcap – tho’ I remember seeing one Olwell bamboo out there with an endcap, it was a much more elegant rosewood endcap). Hey! Maybe it’s really an OWELL. ![]()
Or an ORWELL. All bamboo flutes are equal, but some are more equal than others.

Or maybe Mr Sweet told him just to Oil it Well, and hope for the best!
again!
Or maybe he just said "Oh well, it is bamboo, anyway … "
In fact, Ralph Sweet has a pet owl, goes by the name
of ‘Rick.’ Wants everybody to pet it.
Last time I visited Ralph I bought an F flute.
As I was leaving he said:" You want good luck? Just pat
the owl.’ I was confused and asked: ‘Pat who?’
Ralph said: ‘Pat Rick!’
Pat Rick the Owl … aha, it’s all becoming clear!

So do you think he was referring to the flute or the bird being in tune?
I love Fridays.
Not remotely Olwellian…Run!
Doc
Certainly none you checked the base end work of the flute.
Patrick pays great attention to the foot of the flute.
Just remember this about bamboo flutes.
Its an Olwell that ends well.
Olwell’s on the western front. That flute is in Connecticut.
It might be from Erik the flutemaker.
