I know this is an instrument forum but I already know you’all are already addicted to whistles. Since you have the right genetic architecture to have addiction problems…are you also addicted to Anime?
This is how it started for me… A while back if you can remember Cartoon network started to bradcast the “Adult Swim” timeslot where they would show more adult themed programming. Eventually they started SHowing Anime of verious quality… From Lupin, to the Confusing as heck FLCL (fooly cooly) with a few others mixed in there. These anime’s sparked my interest, I already watched many movies: Vampire Hunter D, Lily Cat, 8 man After, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, etc. Then we got digital Cable, and I discover Free on Demand with Anime Network! Some are good some are bad, but that sparked my interest even More! Now I’m watching series! I can’t get enough! Intial D, Inuyasha, Evangelion, Escaflowne, Naruto, Samurai Shamploo, the list goes on and on… now I’ve started doing online Japanese Flashcards so I can figure out whats going on even more! I think I’m begining to dream in subtitles… Is it possible to broadcast craik?
Now I keep hearing “I’m turning Japanese, i think I’m turning Japanese i realy think so.” As I write this! Argh!
Time to go Chew my nails and watch the next few eppisodes of Escaflowne, and Naruto! I wonder is any New Eppisodes of Saiyuki and Eden’s Bowey have been added to the Anime network lineup yet…
Whats the deal? Why did it post three times? That’s weird…
You can delete the other two by clicking on the X in the upper right corner, but you have to do it before someone else posts. The X disappears after that.
you must really REALLY be addicted! ![]()
I have to admit that I’ve never even watched…sorry Cyf! I sadly can’t share in your obsession, and therefore cannot relate! But maybe if you buy a few more whistles, the playing of them will take up enough of your time and you won’t be so obsessed with Anime…or maybe not. ![]()
I’ve got a few friends who’ve seen all the animes that ever existed, and I’ve seen a few myself. I can’t say I’m obsessed with them, but I download some once in a while and really enjoy the stuff. I’ve seen Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and some other “classics”. So you’re not alone out there ![]()

My favorite shows are Haibane Renmei, .hack//Sign, Jungle wa Itsumo Hale Nochii Guu, Azumanga Daioh, One Piece and Hellsing.

My business partner has become a regular otaku. He got into it from an “art” standpoint, collecting “cels”–original frames. Now he gets the CDs as they come out. His main area of interest is the Miyazaki stuff, but he does watch others. He occasionally calls me to verify translations, and I’ve ended up knowing the names of characters in anime that I’ve never even seen. (His brother is a professional animator, which is how he got into it in the first place. Check out http://www.us.imdb.com/name/nm0142748/.)
As a result, he’s talked me into seeing Spirited Away, Ghost in the Shell and the first three Kaze no Yojimbo CDs. I’ve also seen bits of stuff shown on the Cartoon Network (All-Purpose Cultural Cat Girl NukuNuku) and PBS (Urusei Yatsura, Tenchi Muyo). I find it difficult to maintain an interest in most of the series, but Kaze no Yojimbo is kind of fun. My granddaughter liked Spirited Away. She’s in her fourth semester of Japanese, so we watched it with English sub-titles. I think she has Princess Mononoke, too.
Sometimes I find the titles more interesting than the anime itself.
I was getting ready to tell him to ask Sam. ![]()
Is this sort of like going to the Anime discussion board and asking if anyone digs whistles?
Not quite, because we are ver-r-ry cool here. What kind of geeks would be on an Anime board?
Why, they’re hardly better than Trekkies.
(Doesn’t someone here have an Inuyasha avatar?)
Is this sort of like going to the Anime discussion board and asking if anyone digs whistles?
Yeah. Never the less…
My son, 19, is addicted. My fault. I rented Ghost in the Shell when it first came out. (Great movie) That set the hook. Scary how many titles I recognized in the previous posts. I’ve seen a number of them. Some, I highly recommend, like Spirited Away. I just watched Castle in the Sky last night, which was not bad. I was pretty tired and I watched it pretty late. The artwork of these things is amazing. Makes me wretch to look at a Disney animation in comparison.
My son read in a video game magazine an interview with a big name (Japanese) in music composing for the games that a favorite musician of his is Martin Hayes. (Could I have structured that sentence better?) I have no interest in playing video games, but the visuals in the Final Fantasy games are stunning. I mean, really. I’m not big on the music from them, but there are piano concerto cd’s of the music from Final Fantasy. (Just an aside.)

My sister is totally addicted. She has watched more movies and series than I care to count. As a result, I was also exposed to it. I’ll admit I was reluctant at first, but it’s really grown on me.
My personal favourite is Trigun. Anyone who is into anime should see this series! The whole thing has been released on DVD. I was able to watch it by renting them from a local video store. Some of the best mixes of comedy and action I’ve seen anywhere.
My sister has a bunch of other favourites that look really interesting. There’s one in particular I think I’ll have to borrow called Witch Hunter Robin.

That one was on Cartoon Network recently–sometime around midnight, PST. I happened to hit the first episode in the series and watched a couple more, but then lost track.
BTW my new avatar is a scan from a picture I drew of the crazy vampire character from Hellsing. ![]()
I love anime. But lack of funds/lack of time/well, I buy other stuff . . . keeps me from being a rabid fan. I’ve liked the style going a long ways back, well before it became popular with Pokemon and the other generic kids anime cartoons. Nickolodean used to show a french/Japanese cartoon series called “The Mysterious Cities of Gold”, a forty episode show that attracted kids in the 80’s with it’s intriguing characters, historical backgrounds, and twisting plots. There are several sites on the internet dedicated to the show. Fun to see how many people appricated it.
Later on, I got a couple bootleg copies of Anime from friends who picked them up at comic conventions. Robot Carnival, without any subtitles(not really needed, anyway) and Kiki’s Delivery Service, which english subtitles. And that, of course, was well before Disney started to distribute Miyazaki’s films. I also have “Otako No Video” . . . must be mid to late 80’s . . . funny, funny cartoon about a casual Anime fan who gets the fan bug again and takes on the tast of becoming number one anime fan, “Otaking!” It’s peppered with these odd “interviews” of anime fans who are in varying degrees of obsession/addiction.
The local Blockbuster does have some anime for rent. I have rented in the past (Rumiko Takahashi’s “the Laughing Target”, if I remember right) but haven’t recently.
No.
No addiction.
My eldest daughter and my neighbor/friend (who is my age plus a couple) are both certifiable addicts.
I wouldn’t even dare try to name their faves, LOL.
My neighbor even writes fanfics. Wierd to me, but then I’ve got plenty of notches on my side of that belt, LOL!
I have translated several Anime to be sold outside Japan.
Do I like them? The answer is no, and I can’t understand why anyone over 16 would either.
Apart from the Ghibli studio, there are very few anime that I would want to watch unless somebody was paying me to so.
Give up the anime and dig out some Ozu, Mizoguchi or Kurosawa movies.

Nuku-Nuku is now known as DASH! and is shown on the Anime network. About a year ago (maybe more) Cartoon network Had the Series Rurouni Kenshin (spelling). Which is sort of like an In-between series between the Short “Ova” series based on the Manga (very bloody) and the Samurai X series. It’s a pretty good series but it’s one where you would have to see them all to realy understand what is going on. Sort of like if you started watching Buffy the Vampire slayer half way through season 4… Saiyuki is a series I would suggest to anyone who likes Anime, but for heavens sake watch them in Japanese! I would rather read sub titles, than Listen to some of the “voice actors” that are used in the English translated versions. The best Subtitled Anime are Fan subs usuly done by Americans that also speak Japanese, or Native Japanese speakers who have spent a lot of time in the states. Some of the Inuyasha DVD’s I have are hard to understand with subtitles… Sort of like when you buy a Japanese made product that needs assembling, and the English Directions are translated from Japanese: stuff like “Pleased to be putting Small wooden stick in metal hole as to slowly not cause much preasure that the support arm brekas from main body…If parts not all here take to vender moneys returned mail by” Spelling errors intentional. I’m not trying to be insulting or Racist at all, I’ll tell ya those instructions are a lot better than I would be able to Provide in Japanese. Samurai Shamploo is also a pretty good series as is Escaflowne pron. Ehs-kah-flow-nay (aka The Vision of Escaflowne) and Naruto pron. Nahr-toe. Although for both of those series You have to at least watch the 1st 3 episodes. I have seen quite a few good Anime movies that absolutley blew my mind at the Quality of the Artwork. Japanese animation is like watching a whole musuem of pen and ink artwork fly by at 60 FRAMES per second. I agree going from anime back to regular Walt Disney or Warner Brothers is like walking out of College “Art School” show, and Going to an Art show from the Local Elementary school.
I wonder if I could get a GOvernment grant to see how long it takes someone to learn Japanese from reading Subtitles from Anime… If some dude in South america can study fruit flys and get a nice huge check every month… why cant I for studying something that might be useful.
Oh btw… Buy whistles??? What? I haven’t bought a WHistle in I don’t know how long… If I want a new one I go make one… I’m still messing with the Carbon fiber one a Built a few months back… I’m also working on a bamboo Low D flute too. If I could only get the finish right… I have sanded it so many times it’s actually starting to go out of tune… in fact I’m off to do that now… Maybe I’ll whipe it down with linseed oil and call it done… now where did i put those cotton rags… Just kiddin ![]()
Not all anime is created equal, Mukade. You’re watching the wrong stuff, trust me.
If you want something less kiddie-ish, try Haibane Renmei. Cowboy Bebop is really good too.
