An ironic example of non-irony:

3 a (1) : incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result.
Agreed G. I thought we Chiffers were reacting in a lighthearted way to a slightly troubling question, and also expanding the topic.
Now I feel somehow that I’ve been told off, and I feel sad. 
It’s a rare enough event to have a thread locked, but it’s even rarer that I can’t see any need for it. Nobody was flaming or trolling anybody here.
However, it is Dale’s board, and I owe him more than he knows, so he is forgiven anything.
btw, when I looked this morning, I didn’t notice if the thread had been locked, but I did notice that after Cranberry’s post, written concurrently with Dale’s, people were respecting Dale’s request. If the lock went on after this it seems a bit “chastity belt & braces”.
I think I saw what Dale saw on my first reading of the first post–and seeing the author. I can see why he was uncomfortable with it. Dale doesn’t lock threads indiscriminately. Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt.

It seemed to be another pointless chapter in an equally pointless vendetta which bores everyone to tears and locking it out was the smartest move to make.

My example of irony: I was tutoring a high school jock who wanted to earn a football scholarship. Sadly, the kid could barely read. We were going over his poetry assignment and I had him read the instructions aloud. It was excruciating to listen to, culminating when he mispronounced the word “alliteration” as “illiterate.”
My other all-time favourite was the young chap who got busted for cheating on a test at university. An ethics class.

being the author of the thread in question, i guess i need to step forward. contrary to what you all seem to believe, the thread about the p word was not done as a dig at anyone, nor was it done as a joke, nor was it done in ridicule. nor was it directed at any one person in particular. mental illness is not a joke. it can wreck the life of the person suffering with it and the lives of those who they love. i, too, have my own demons that i must deal with - depression.
if the thread had been done as a dig or as a joke then i certainly wouldn’t have asked the questions i did. there is no attempt at humor or ridicule there. i understand that the p word can lead to jokes about people out to get you - and i think those jokes were all directed at me anyway. the questions that i posed (re-read them) were intended to make others aware how hard it can be to separate delusion from reality for some people. and also, how difficult a cure would be if the person believes the doctor and everyone else is acting not in their best interest.
there is someone who i care about who in the middle of teaching her class started seeing blue men. she had to be escorted from the school and was put under a doctor’s care. the question that i would have posed about this mental illness is how do we know that what she was seeing was not - in fact- real, and perhaps everyone else did not have the sensitivity to see what she saw. perceptions and reality can be fleeting. this also would not have been an attempt at ridiculing her or anyone else suffering like she did - she is now doing much better, thank you for asking.
i could tell you why i have such a peeve about arrogant, pompous, self-important, self-righteous, over-bearing, obnoxious, selfish, narcissistic, self-centered, egotistical, ill-mannered, spoiled, pretentious princesses and princes but i won’t. --you are all welcome in advance. 
I could tell that you had reservations about me, but I didn’t realize it was this bad…
