iRiver H120 Users - new, improved firmware for recording

Hey all you whistling/fluting iRiver H120 owners who do all your recording on the iRiver. iRiver has FINALLY released some new firmware and while it doesn’t solve all the problems with the H120, it does make quite a few improvements. You can download the new firmware here.

iRiver made a typically strange press release explaining the new features of the firmware. I’ve posted the text of it below. You can find the original here

Hello, this is iriver.

For further details please refer to the download page and please learn how to upgrade the firmware

We apologize for the accumulation of time in firmware support for the H100 series and we will try to provide firmware upgrades for the other iriver products in the near future.

We will do our best to bring you our customers the satisfaction by providing various features.

Thank you.

:play_button: Additional Features :reverse_button:

  1. Record Setting features support: The Record Type, Bitrate, AGC features of the previous firmware version can now be set in the Record menu.

  2. Internal Mic Volume feature support: When recording with the internal microphone, you can ajust the volume. (Default is 16, you can select from 0~20)

  3. Line in Volume feature support: When recording from a different device you can set the volume of the recording. (Default is 16, you can set from 0~20)
※ Does not work when recording through Optical In.

  4. Voice Detect feature support: When there is a sound for a selected amount of time during silence, it will detect that sound and start recording. Level represents the volume of the sound. So, when there is a sound that is greater than the level that you set, the recording will begin.

  5. Auto Sync feature support: When using Line In, Optical In recording, the recording file will be splitted according to the gaps between the songs. For example, if set for 3 seconds and there is no sound for 3 seconds, the recording will continue on to a different file. (0~5 seconds can be set, if set to 0 seconds the Auto Sync feature will be deactivated.)
※ This feature does not apply if set to “Record Setting → FORMAT → WAV” and only works when set to MP3.

  6. A-B buttom will display the Record Setting screen when in recording stand-by mode: In the previous version, if you clicked on the A-B button you could only change the Source but in firmware v1.65 it will directly display the Record Setting screen where the settings can be changed.

(N/A is when the corresponding feature is not supported. If selected INT.MIC under Source, the Output Vol. does not work.)

  7. Menu→Record Menu changed to be the same as the H300 series Record menu:
(left: Previous Record menu, right: New Record menu)

  8. When clicking the REC button in the recording stand-by mode to record, the beginning of the session was not recorded due to the delay. This has been fixed.

2.In the Japanese OS, specific songs could not be found during playback of playlists. This has been fixed.

  1. Other petty bugs has been fixed.

Yes, but does it work with a “Frickin’ Recorder”?

Kim

Heya Kim! Nice to see you. 'sup in or around Tulsa?

 I’d forgotten about that. Thanks for giving me a good laugh!

Thanks Chris, I’m all upgraded!

Thanks for the information.

What kind of battery life do you guys get from your iRiver H120.? I left mine on for about 4-5 hours and the battery drained - I was not impressed - is this normal? I seem to remember iRiver claiming 16 hours battery life…

I run mine for 8 - 9 hours a day on battery power. At the end of the day, the battery charge indicator is down to about 50%. I have never run this battery down and I’m completely delighted with it.

The battery life is strongly linked to hard drive usage. So battery life actually depends on the encoding rate of your MP3s – the higher the quality, the shorter the battery life. Also, I think recording is even harder on the battery-- I don’t think I’ve ever gotten better than 5 hours recording tme (at 192kbs). I routinely get at least twice that in playback time (still mostly at 192kbs).

I had actually left it connected to the computer via the USB - would that make a difference?

If you leave a window open to the iRiver to search for files, that keeps the hard drive running all the time, which undoubtedly drains the battery faster.

If you have it connected, but no windows open - not sure.

Thanks Martin - I’m going to leave it playing all day today to test it out and see how long it lasts.

My daily use of the device is for playback, even though I bought it for recording purposes. My MP3s are recorded at 98kbps. I have recorded workshops, etc., but I didn’t pay attention to battery usage at that time.
