Here in the USA, we play the Star Spangled Banner as our national anthem.
Custom calls for US citizens to stand, face the flag and if in uniform to salute, if not in uniform, to cover your heart with the right hand. Men should remove any head covering if not in uniform.
What is the custom in Ireland?
When is the anthem usually played? What type of events? Do people sing?
The anthem is played more in Ireland than here. I’ve seen it played at the end of the dancing portion of a wedding, just before the couple leaves. It would not be played at a disco, but at more conservative dance functions. People do sing, mumble really. Sometimes in Irish. When people wore hats more, the hat went on the chest. Patriotism is as high or higher in Ireland as in US. Even though there is less hoopla and fuss at sports events in Ireland, we do play the anthem when facilities permit (band or sound system). At the end of the anthem it’s customary to beat up on Englishmen. Only on the playing field, mind you.
