Name your top five favorites for me, wouldya?

I would have to say my top 5 recordings are:

Lunasa
Solas
Paperboys
Old Blind Dogs
Molly’s Revenge

Conal O’Grada’s “Top of Coom” for sheer exuberance and attitude. “One at a Time” by John Skelton - great breadth of material and variety of technique. The Kevin Crawford “D Flute Album”, though I am starting to like his “In Good Company” more and more. Finally two recordings which are great examples of traditional styles: Eddie Cahill’s “Ah Surely”, and the Original Recordings of John McKenna. Of course Matt Molloy should also be on the list somewhere.

I dunno that it’s one of my top five in the long term, but Cathal McConnell’s “Long Expected Come At Last” hasn’t left my CD player for a long time.

Two great ones come to mind (I usually rate CDs by the number of tunes and techniques I rip-off from them :slight_smile: )
Of course there’s any Molloy or Tansey.
But lately I’ve listened a lot (and played along with) Gary Shannon’s “Loozin’ Air” and Michael McGoldrick’s “Fused.”
For sheer bliss of flute work and listening enjoyment of a full group with the player, I like Lunasa and especially Deanta with Deidra Havilland (sp?).
I must get O’Grada’s CD. He’s due here for a visit in a few weeks. It would help if I had it on the shelf while he was in the shop. :slight_smile:

The top 3 I’ve been listening to lately are:
Laurence Nugent “The Windy Gap”
Grey Larsen & Paddy League “The Green House”
Jody’s Heaven “Garden of Butterflies”

and any early Altan!

I love when people post questions like this; so many gems are mentioned that I end up saying, “yes, I have to get that one the next time I’m in a country that considers Unternational music something more than Madonna and Nine Inch Nails.”

My fav flute albums right now are:

  1. and 2. Matt Malloy, Heathery Breeze and Stony Steps (can’t get enough of the low Bb flute–David M, I need a flute d’amour! Actually Olwell’s working on one for me.)

  2. and 4. Laurence Nugent’s Two for Two and Windy Gap

  3. Kevin Crawford, In Good Company

  4. Solas, first album is may all time fav–went down hill from there unforturnately.

I’d really like to hear Mike McGoldrick and a few others new on the scene.

I highly recommend digging into the old stuff, as well as checking out the albums that are self released or released on small labels in Ireland and never make it to the US, I’ve found that the Knotted Chord music shop http://www.knottedchord.com is an excellent choice for getting hard to find, authentic irish traditional music at a good price.
That said, my current top five are:

  1. John Whynn (sp?) - Every Breath
  2. Catherine McAvoy - Traditional Flute Music in the Sligo-Roscommon Style
  3. Colm O’Donnel - Fairwell to the Evening Dances
  4. Emer Mayock - Merry Bits of Timber
  5. Paul McGratten - The Frost is all over

Of course, anything by Matt Molloy will always do. May I also recommend my favorite CD of recent years, The Mountain Road - Traditional Music From South Sligo, and it’s acompanying tune book. Brilliant stuff!!!
