Unfortunately, there is less and less traditional irish music at this fair every year. The management does not seem to encourage it, although Danu was a performer last year.
Many, MANY years ago there was a fiddle contest. But no instruction that I know of recently. I haven’t heard of any instruction this year.
In past years, the Celtic Arts Center booth has attempted to assemble a session at the end of the day, but it is not always successful. Mostly because there is not a lot of emphasis on tradtional music, so a lot of players don’t bother going to the fair. Even so, I still attend when I can.
FWIW they’ve really been pushing the fact that Gaelic Storm will be playing there a few times.
Steve is very correct though. I’ve been going off and on for a number of years now and things are getting worse (musically as well). I do have some lovely photos of my oldest son sliding down the decks of the sinking Titanic (an incredibly large inflatable one…that is).
hello Cerrabus,
Thanks for the heads up on the festival, it sounds like it will be fun. I was looking for something to do this weekend! And it’s only 25 minutes away. Jon
I got this message from Steve Forman regarding a session:
Just so you know, there’s a new pub in the Valley: The Mulligan Irish Pub & Restaurant at 16153 Victory Blvd about 1/2 block west of Woodley on Victory in Van Nuys. If you’re interested we’ll be playing there in an open session from 2 pm tomorrow (June 15). Helen and Joe (the owners) are really supportive of Irish music and they’ll pick up the tab for drinks & food! So If you’re going to the Irish Fair please stop in and play with us- we’ll be across the street. If you get a chance let me know if you’re coming so we have enough chairs.
