Well, as I’m new to this forum, I’ll introduce myself.
I am Celebriel Esgaledhel, aka Celebriel, C_E, Celeb, or Senekha. I am a message-board addict, but my favorite message board of all time is at http://www.tolkienonline.com. As you can guess, I am a long-time fan of Tolkien and his works (especially the Sindarin language! )
I have long been a fan of Irish/Celtic music and art, and I have been participating in an Irish dancing course for several months now, where I have discovered the best of reels, jigs, and sore feet. I have my own tin whistle and a(normal) flute, and I have been playing musical instruments for the better part of my life. Among the other instruments I play are the trumpet (which I play in an orchestra), piano, and various other types of woodwinds.
Why have I started a new thread and rambled on about my life? Well, I was cruising through the internet, looking for ways to fix up my whistle, and I found the Chiff and Fipple site. As you can guess, I eventually found my way over here, and this forum topic. I scrolled down, fully expecting to see an Irish dancing thread, but I found none. Thus I have started a meagre thread, in hopes of finding other Irish dancers. I think it would be interesting and educational to talk to some other dancers who have more experience than I.
So, down to the point - Are there any other Irish dancers out there? If so, please post a comment or two here - I’d love to here from you!
Ooooooooh. How I envy you!!! I’ve dreamed of, for years, learning Irish dancing. But there are no opportunities to learn it where I live. When possible I’ll attend Willie Clancy’s summer school to learn some there. I was in Ireland recently and tried some set dancing I the instructor danced a jig just to let us see what it looks like and oh, how I wanted to learn it! I really love playing jigs and would adore dancing to them!!!
Are you certain? You’ve probably already seen this, but just in case you didn’t know about it, check out this link- there are quite a number of dance opportunities in Sweden. Of course, I don’t know Sweden’s geography, so these may not be anywhere near you.
I have a performance coming up on the 18th, and I have an injured foot. Unfortunately, I don’t think that my foot will heal completely before then, so, instead of my jump-twuo-threes, I"ll be doing limp-two-threes…
I went to a recital on Tues, and I"m regreting that already. My foot got worse I’m going again tonight, but I think i"m only going to walk through it.
btw - I also discovered that Irish dancing does not work on one foot…
I hope to find other dancers out there! And if you don’t dance Irish, you should!
No, not for very long, though I hope to keep it for for several years (if I can continually schedule it around boxing). I am only in my second session (a session is 10 weeks).
Pearl Grey, if you do start, I am sure that you will enjoy it. It’s great for building up calf and upper leg muscles, and it’s fun!
As it turned out, I was unable to perform in the before mentioned performance. I re-injured my foot during a rehersal. I was up on my toes, and the strain from my previous injury was too much for it too take…so, the part of my foot just above my toes went “POP!” and some tendons et cetera were torn off the bone. Quite painful.
