Introducing myself

An introduction,

The text underneath the titel says, socialising. And hope an introduction would appropriate here.

Fenella is my nickname, I’m 25 years young, from the Netherlands (excuse me for my bad English).
I’m a part-time student/part-time working and have a history of blow instruments.

I started at 7 whit a 7 hole whistle (don’t know how they are called in English) when I was 9 I started playing the flute until I was 19. At that age puberty kicked in, and it was’nt interesting any more. After a few years I picked it up again, but i wanted something easier to handle, something I could grab easy. I had a sneaky wish for the tin whistle for long time, and after a while bought a package with a Guiness tin whistle in D with a musicbook and cd. I had a lot of trouble with that whistle, had to blow real hard to get nice high tones out of it. So I bought a Meg by Clarke in D. And I improved a lot in sound.

I first learned the tunes out of the book that was in the package, then found some lessons on youtube and a few websites with sheetmusic and found the price list of the nearby musicschool (auch) And that brings me to this point.

I became a member of this forum because, i have a lot of questions, i would like to search for some fellow whistlers ( maybe in my region) to exchange experience with, looking for tips for newbie’s and some socialising.

I wish you all a nice week,
Greetings Fenella

Hi, welcome aboard.

I wish there was a standard way of looking for people by region, but I don’t think there is.

I would use the search function and look for the word “Netherlands” some recent posts, like by arnie, are by people in that area. A PM or other communication might point to a direction that can help.

Good luck.

On the other hand, people local to you will respond in this thread and they’ll find you. And everyone will live happily every after.

Does Fenella mean anything?

There are a couple of forums here…
Teachers Wanted / Students Accepted
City Guide

if you search for Netherlands
on those two forums,
you’ll turn up your post and 2 others…

not too helpful

We have at least one user, Berti66 that is in the Netherlands

'course silly…run down to the Irish Language forum and ask 'em… (although it is Scots  )

Welcome here buddy…

you’ll get used to it after a while.

Slan,
D.

Welcome aboard, Fenella!

Your English is just fine, by the way.

Welcome Fenella!
The Pub tends to have conversations about things other than whistles. If you want more whistle information, check out the whistle forum of Chiff and Fipple:

(In case you haven’t already)

I fear the Irish Language Forum.

just shoulder yer way in…they’re nice enough

Nope. Not gonna do it. Can’t make me.

That makes two of us.

Your English is charming, Fen.

Welcome, Fenella!

Thank you all for the welcoming words and tips, I like it here already!

Hi Fenella!

They dasn’t speak good English here anyway, barring Bloomfield & Talsiga, and gey few can understand them.

Fenella means “White Shoulder” according to the Baby-names site. I wonder if they’ve worked out yet that babies grow up into adults. I still have my baby-name… …doubt it will be with me till I’m planted.

Fenella also means honest. A nickname that fits me nicely.
My real name is by the way Hanneke, a more traditional Dutch name. My parents choose this name because it means strength.

you remind me of

Ah, c’mon! We don’t bite! (at least not very hard!)

Hi & welcome Fenella!
One way to attract local whistlers is to whistle in public.
Another to find a local Irish pub session and see if any whistlers turn up.

I lived for a long time at the foot of Finella Hill, in what was then called Kincardineshire, Scotland. The hill got the name from a local noble woman called Finnguala, Fionnuala or Fenella, who lived in a castle, later ruined, called Kincardine Castle or later Fenella Castle.

She earned some reputation and a legend arose around her, because in the year 995 the Scottish king Kenneth II was murdered at Kincardine castle:

The next fragment of history associated with this fragmentary place occurred in the year 995, when King Kenneth II (not the 3rd as other sources say) was murdered, either here or near here. Cuncar of Angus, who was either Mormaer (earl) or Toisech (Thane) of Angus, had a daughter called Finnguala or Fenella, whose son had been put to death by Kenneth II. There are few historical records for this period, but the Annals of Ulster say Kenneth was killed “by deceit” and the Annals of Tigernach say “by his subjects”.

As usual, legend has filled in the missing details of Kenneth’s death for us – correctly or otherwise! “Fenella, though the execution had apparently been a deserved one, did not the less readily determine on revenging her son’s death. She invited Kenneth to lodge in her house near Fettercairn in the Mearns : here he was assassinated. The inhospitable murderess escaped from her castle (of which the vestiges are still visible) down a valley called Strath-Fenella, to a place in the parish of Fordun, where she was seized and put to death.” The glen to the north of Kincardine is still called Strath Finella.

Anyway, it is a lovely wooded hill, and the glen next to it, called Strath Finella, is gorgeous. My children grew up there, and we had many adventures and wonderful walks.

Now I live at Findhorn, which got its name from the river Findhorn, meaning “white river” (some dispute this, but it stems from Scottish Gaelic, perhaps “Fionn-Eren”). The River Findhorn is in many places quite wild, with a lot of white water, stunningly beautiful (some photos).

Cheers,
~Hans

@ hans,
I like the story of the noble lady, and would like to visit the castle and hill someday. I really like those tellings. And the pictures you linked where gorgeous.

For your ideas to meet fellow whistlers. I’m to scared to play on the street, i dont even dare to play in front of my family  (sounds pretty silly when i write it).

And for the pubs/sessions there not really in my region. Those are more in the big city’s over 100 km away unfortunately. But there is a dutch forum for folk, maybe if there is going to be something in my area, ill find it there.

Thanks for the ideas and sharing you story, I really appreciate it.

Fenella, if you don’t mind my asking, where in The Netherlands do you live? I ask because I know an Irish musician who lives in The Netherlands, and he might know where you could look for sessions.
