Internet Learning Options

[From a thread on the Whistle forum]

Not trying to get into which is “best”, but what are some of the other internet learning options that you would recommend - and what are their pros and cons (i.e., why do you recommend them)?

Thanks and best wishes.

Steve

I offer online flute and whist lessons. Some of the pros include:

  1. you can take lessons from anywhere in the world, you don’t have to be in Ireland or an area with a decent concentration of Irish immigrants and musicians
  2. you can set up a lesson for when it’s most convenient for you

Cons?

  1. You don’t get the real “in-person” feel I suppose. In the past my in-person lessons have contained somewhat of a physical element, where if someone doesn’t seem to be getting a fingering I’ll just grab their fingers and show them where/how to place them. This has actually been very helpful for quite a few of my students. But you can’t get that online.

Otherwise, I really don’t know any other cons.

I’d also suggest checking out Blayne Chastain’s site here: http://blaynechastain.com/i-teach

I take lessons using Skype and, as said before, there is a minor problem with not being able to physically interact. However, my playing has improved a lot from these lessons. And in some ways they are handier because my teacher will often record a tune, or piece of tune that illustrates the point he is trying to have me understand, and then he e-mails me that file. This way I can use that in my practice instead of just relying on memory.

I think there are several very good players who would be willing to teach in this way. My suggestion would be to find the player you would most like to emulate and try to contact them about the possibility of lessons. There is little use in learning to play like someone that only “sort of” excites your ears.

You might find some leads in the " Teachers / Students Wanted " forum. Good Luck !
