Interesting article on practice and learning.

Apologies if someone else has posted this and I missed it.

That’s an excellent article, Loren. I’ve been thinking about practice a lot lately. I became quite frustrated at a lack of progress awhile back. That led to playing less, which, of course, leads to less progress, and it’s been a vicious circle. I’ve never been one to do something ad infinitum – I try to work on maybe ten tunes at a time (or one full sonata), because I do bore very easily. Maybe using the method in the article consciously will give me the psychological boost I’ve needed.

I also thought about this in an entirely different context this morning. I’m training for a marathon, which involves in my case, adding two miles a week to my long run. Once I’m up to about 13 miles/21k, I run the same route, just turning around a mile further each week. (Given the population and road density around here, there are very limited safe routes for long runs.) I’m up to 15 miles/25km, so this has been three weeks in a row on the same trail. I was especially feeling the boredom after 40 minutes or so this morning. I changed the music from Eliza Carthy to Ozric Tentacles. The OT music was really cool, because they have a lot of weird sounds in their music. I heard this droning of crickets/katydids/cicadas in the background and thought it was a really cool effect. Then it occurred to me that it might not be in the music – sure enough, I took the earbuds out, and it was ambient. But it went really well with the music, which I thought was cool, and which eased the boredom considerably.

So I think I’ll start making playlists that mix up the music for long runs now.

Cheers,

Yess!!! My attention deficit practice disorder might actually be good for something!

I need to balance the noodling with targeted technique work, but at least I can stop feeling guilty about not being able to force myself to focus on one thing only for extended periods.

Very interesting, thanks for the link Loren. So running through a tune a few times then reading some posts here is not so bad after all ?

I think the Robert Bjork videos linked from the article are fascinating as well.
