Seeing that these instruments sometimes cost a bomb…especially the keyed ones by Very Reputable Makers, do any of you insure your flutes?
just today I was wondering if my home insurance covers the flutes, and if it does, I doubt that while on the road there is any coverage?
Guess I need to call the agent.
Yes. Separate Musical instrument insurance.

All of my instruments are insured through Clarion (a company that insures musical instruments). I think it costs 81 cents per hundred dollars of coverage per year.

Clarion has come under fire for making their insurance almost useless for professional musicians, so you may want to check that it will work for you. I think basically they don’t cover you well if music is your main line of work.

Our homeowners insurance is with Allstate, and they added $10,000 worth of coverage for our instruments for about $4.00 per year. The only proviso being that we don’t use them for professionally paid gigs. Playing for our local historical society events and joining the session at at nearby pub is OK. We might have to rethink if music ever supplanted our day jobs, but for now this works just fine.
