Raising some $$ for nursing school textbooks etc, so here are some nice instruments for y’all. Nothing wrong with any of them: I simply don’t have the time to play them.
Bb Fife in Cooktown Ironwood by Mark Hoza of Australia
This is really a beautiful instrument, in a handmade leather roll case. I’m sorry to part with it, but someone should really be enjoying this instead of it sitting around my house. I can send a picture to a seriously interested buyer. Asking $100
Dixon high D whistle-- brass tuning slide, original case: $30
Antique military style fife. This looks like Rosewood with brass ferrules at each end. I think it’s Bb. I’ve been told this is Civil War ear, but I can’t vouch for that. If you’re familiar with Cooperman fifes, this is the type that those were copied from. No cracks, cork is intact. All I’ve done to this is to give it a good cleaning and oiling. $50
Zen-On plastic Baroque style Soprano recorder in C (actually pitched same as a D whistle). This is NOT the Stanesby Jr version, but an older version. Still a first rate instrument which can handle ANYTHING written for Soprano recorder ( if you’ve got the chops ). $15
One more, as a longshot… A beautiful 1978 (approx) Gordet Oboe. Full conservatory fingering, including side F key. Has one professionally repaired crack, otherwise superb condition. Rich, dark sound. Asking $2000. Negotiable
I’m open to offers on any and all of these. E-mail please to paul@busmanwhistles.com rather than those cumbersome PMs. Thanks.
The feelings’s mutual. Try attaching an oboe reed to say…a Generation G body. Very “interesting” results. Find a cheap duduk…that’s what I’d say. If you like it, go up on an oboe someday. Me, I’ve always wanted to tackle a bassoon. I think I’d pass out just breathing next to it.
I have a friend who plays bassoon, so getting my hands on one wouldn’t be too much of a problem. However, when he first started out, I remember me almost suffocating trying to breathe for him myself. I use to get short-breathed playing tenor sax. Trumpet was never a problem. And yeah, prices are crazy. In some cases, people would recommend you get a nice fixer-upper. I know there’s a guy near NJ who fixes bassoons. But, that dream of mine is most likely one I won’t pursue, because even if you got the lungs for it, there’s still infinity + 6 keys on a bassoon, nine or so being thumb keys. Ahhh! Those hectic Heckels!
I do understand about the lung thing. I was trying to play my friends Tenor Sax today and since this was after I had been playing Bassoon, I could barely play it as I was squezzing too hard with my lips and blowing too hard. This is starting to sound kind of weird.
I think the guy you speak of is in Brooklyn. 10 keys for one thumb and 4 for the other.
BTW, bump. I hope that Fife sells, I don’t need to be buying any more instruments.
As someone who has played both bassoon and saxophone, I must say that they’re not too dissimilar. Saxophone is much easier, though, and bassoon has more a tendency to swallow up your entire life. Both are loads of fun, though.
